It’s been so long since we’ve had kittens (our three family cats are all pushing 13 years old) that we’d forgotten what distinct little personalities they can all have.

We’ve got one that’s very shy and cautious, but once she warms up to you she’s your best friend (she’s the one whose tummy you can see in the crate in the picture). Another (the one on the right with the white socks) is the definite leader of the pack and loves to “attack” anything that moves.

Another (the one on top of the crate) also loves to instigate wrestling matches but he’s also the first one at the door when you go into the room, and loves cuddles. The last (on the left) goes along with whatever her two brothers are doing, and loves to pick on the shy one.

Just like real siblings, in my experience!

Wordy Wednesday: Kittens

Within the next few hours we’ll be getting a litter of four kittens who will likely only be with us overnight, as we’ll have to take them into Petco tomorrow for an adoption event, and there’s a very good chance they’ll all find new homes. I’m very excited just the same, and think this is going to be a great experience for all of us.

If you’re interested in cat fostering, get ahold of someone at your local Humane Society, which is who runs the adoption events at the Petcos in my area (or talk to one of the volunteers at the store itself). We heard back from the coordinator within a few days of filling out an application, and the home inspection basically just consisted of making sure you have the room to keep the animals.

The Humane Society will provide all the necessities — from the food, to litter, even the litter box and, of course, vet visits if needed — so you won’t be out anything monetarily, except for a drive down to the pet store on the weekends to drop them off!

Fostering Cats, Part 2

While my girls ooh’d and ahh’d over the kittens, my husband and I got to talking with one of the volunteers about the three cats we already have. Though we’re not “in the market” for any more pets we do miss having kittens around (and the girls have never had kittens!), the volunteer mentioned that they can always use volunteers for fostering.

Cat fostering is something my husband and I have talked about off and on for several years, but between the kids being too young and not having the room it just wasn’t a possibility. Now, however, the kids are older and a lot more responsible, and we have a little extra room to dedicate to it. Before we left I filled out an application and will hopefully hear back soon!

Hot on the heals of the Shiba Inu puppy cam from a few months ago comes this adorable live webcam of three playful kittens — Shanghai, Seven, and Tweet — and their mama Daphne.

Kitten Cam!

The Puppy Bowl is an annual broadcast by Animal Planet that coincides with the Big Game. For its fifth year, the Bowl will feature over a dozen rough and tumble puppies of all breeds romping around a small “field” with cameras catching every playful minute. It will also bring back the cute “tailgating puppies” from the third year, and will introduce Pepper the Parrot, who will sing a unique rendition of the National Anthem!

The Bissel Kitty Halftime Show was introduced in the second year of the Bowl and was an instant hit (how could it not be?).

The half-hour halftime show involves kittens playing around on kitty trees and batting at toys (and each other), and ends with a blast of confetti and streamers.

The best part of all (aside from all the adorable puppies and kittens) is that all the animals in the show are available for adoption after the big day!

Ninja Kittens

It’s trouble for me to watch videos of kittens. Three cats is more than enough but even my husband, who is staunchly ‘no more pets,’ has a hard time watching kitten videos because they’re so cute, so he doesn’t. But I can’t help it. Until I got to the end of this one and realized “Oh yeah, that.”

How to Break Up a Cat Fight

Every year for the last few years Animal Planet has been broadcasting their Puppy Bowl pre-game show. Tune in Sunday, February 3 from 3-6 PM (ET/PT) to see puppies of all breeds do what puppies do best: frolic, tumble, and make you say awww!

From baby beagles to mini dachshunds to mixed breeds — viewers are in for a fantastic lineup that’s itching to play in a winning combination of tackles, puppy penalties and fido first downs. The renowned Harry Kalas, voice of NFL Films, returns to call the play-by-plays of this year’s game.

Cat lovers aren’t left out either. The half-time show, sponsored by Bissell (who else?) – will feature kittens on a glittery stage chasing each other and batting toys around.

Don’t Miss the Puppy Bowl IV!

I love when stories of interspecies interaction end happily!

Six abandoned kittens have found an unexpected new mother figure – a pet rabbit. Veterinary nurse Melanie Humble took the three-week-old kittens to her Aberdeen home.

The kittens seemed to think Summer the rabbit was their mother and began to climb all over her and try to feed from her. “The abandoned kittens were handed in when they were about three weeks old and I took them home.

“Summer the rabbit was taken inside on Bonfire Night because of the fireworks and the kittens seemed to really like her and thought she was their mother.”

Pet Rabbit Adopts Kittens

Here are two of my dogs, Trinket & Drummer. Trinket is the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and my former show dog. Drummer is the American Cocker Spaniel, he’s not a champion, but he’s the best at sleeping on the couch & looking cute.

Stripe. A dog. My husband found him in front of our driveway 4 years ago. He had been thrown from the car at a high speed and had massive head injuries. I expected him to die during the night so made him comfortable and waited. I am still waiting…. It did take him two years to learn to bark, 3 years to have complete control of his bladder, and he sometimes lists to the side when he is tired…He is some sort of incredibly complex canine mixture which includes a genetic love of riding in the car.
