This week, China lifted a 14-year ban which barred women who have sex with other women from donating blood. But unfortunately, letting lesbians donate blood is just the first of many steps that are required to make the practice of blood donation–which is a life-saving and awesome thing for everyone to do–less discriminatory. Anderson Cooper may not have shocked fans by coming out, but his frank announcement that he’s gay is a huge boon for LGBT health. As The Daily Beast’s Andrew Sullivan pointed out, non-hetero celebrities are no longer earth-shattering anomalies, and in Cooper’s case, rumors of his sexual orientation have abounded for years. It’s hard to say that his announcement is shocking. What his announcement does accomplish, however, is a steadily growing public support for LGBT mental and physical health. More
Hooray! President Obama just came out in support of full marriage equality for gay and lesbian Americans, in an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts this afternoon. Though he stressed that he was expressing his personal position—politically, he still supports states’ rights to decide on their own—his open endorsement for same-sex marriage is huge, especially considering the impact it might have on his upcoming run for re-election. When 18-year-old Alison Poirir, a senior at Dublin School in New Hampshire, attended a town hall meeting with Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, she tells me that she already had her questions in mind. The meeting, which took place at Alison’s school, was not a requirement for students. But since becoming a legal adult and registering to vote, the high school senior has been making an effort to be more informed about politics.
Alison’s mother is the Democratic Town Commission and recently ran to be a police commissioner, but first-time voter maintains that politics are hardly the crux of her household. More

Transgender Travel Just Got a Little Safer: The State Department is helping transgender travelers by allowing them to change their passport without sexual reassignment surgery. Beginning Thursday, only a doctor’s note verifying gender transition treatment will be required. For transgender travelers, this means much safer travel in certain countries, where LGBT communities are at risk for harassment and discrimination. (via Blackbook)
