Bridal Shows Gone Horribly Awry: Selling Liposuction To Brides Is Just Wrong

Oh, just wait until all the Bridezillas out there get a hold of this one: Bridal shows are the latest place to sell liposuction. That’s right all you brides-to-be, according to a recent article in Allure magazine, women at one show were treated to an afternoon of mingling amongst booths of cake samples, bridesmaid dresses and surgery options to lose fat. I wonder how many brides flocked to that booth in search of the “perfect” wedding day body? Not to mention, there were also vendors at this show touting Botox and raffles giving away free cosmetic surgery. Ugh.

Study Says Liposuction Is Temporary, But Body Confidence Lasts Forever

Actress Camryn Manheim (The Practice) had a one-woman show called “Wake Up! I’m Fat!”, a title I’ve always loved. It’s not that I think people should start eating pizza and cakes in record numbers; I just love the sentiment that, hey, guess what, we’re not robots or fitness models. We’re human, we’re flawed, and sometimes we gain weight. We’re not oblivious to our imperfections. We’re dealing with them. We know when we’re past the point of healthy and we’re doing the best we can, but laying more insecurity and shame on our bodies is the last thing we need. If only the women in this liposuction study could have seen Manheim’s one-woman show, because it seems all they want to hear is “thinspirational” notions, rather than the facts: liposuction is a temporary form of weight-loss, and the fat comes back.

Poll: Would You Go Under the Knife for Your Vanity?

It’s easy to judge women (and men) who opt for plastic surgery or liposuction, just because we think we’d never do it. But we’re still young-ish. How can we be sure we won’t change our minds later on? Of course, there’s no way we want end up looking like the current Courteney Cox or Christa Miller from ABC’s Cougar Town (what the hell were they thinking?), but maybe we’d just need to find a better plastic surgeon.
