Because you want to create a unique wedding.
It’s a great way to save money.
You want to be more involved in your wedding (and not just turn it over to a planner or someone else).
Because you love to make things.
You & your fiance want to express your own distinct style.
You don’t want to do the big, white, poofy princess wedding gown.

One benefit of rereading your journals is how you pick up your own annoying writing habits. Overuse of certain words is one of my annoying habits. While it’s easy to roll your eyes at your repetition and read on you might want to investigate why you’re using those particular words so often.

Is it sheer laziness? Could you find a better word to describe precisely what you’re writing about? Or does the word have some significance for you?

During a rereading session note the words you repeat often. In your next journal writing session make a concentrated effort not to use any of those words, at all. You will feel some resistance. Force yourself to become more creative. Dig into what it is you’re writing, describing or emoting. Find another way to write it. Perhaps you will get at the truth more effectively.

Make a list of the words you’re overusing. Over the next week think about what those words really mean to you. Look them up in your dictionary, thesaurus, investigate them. What significance do you assign them?

I hope this entry gives you something to think about this week.

I’m just taking a moment out from visiting family and friends to wish all my readers a very happy new year. I hope you spent some time writing your list of goals for the New Year in your journal at some point. If not, why not do it today? A list of ten is a great place to begin.
And if you want to begin keeping a journal this year, there’s no better place to begin than with your goals for 2007. Have a great day.

Notebook magazine is running a competition with a fine list of firsts I recommend as journal writing prompts. Their competition is open to Australian and New Zealand residents. Why not make it just as difficult, er… more like a challenge, and write your response in 25 words or less, too. Or, you could enter the competition. You’ll need to be a member of their website first, though.
If you write a response to any firsts in your journal, please share a link to your blog, or post it in the comments section below.
