Marriage Poll: How Do You Sort Playing Cards

The holiday weekend gave Kerri and I a number of opportunities to play games with neighbors, and this question stems directly from a “disagreement” we had with another couple this weekend. Simply put: How do you sort playing cards? Assuming you order them, there are two likely possibilities. Looking at your hand and reading from left to right you either see:

A – K – Q – J – 10 – 9

or you see:

9 – 10 – J – Q – K – A

Vote below or in the sidebar. Be warned: there is a correct answer, one which Kerri and I agree on though we have promised not to reveal it until the poll is closed as a favor to our misguided friends.

Time to wrap up the June poll, and Kerri and I are both pleased to see the results.

It looks like we are taking to heart the admonition that communication is the foundation of a good relationship. I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. Kerri and I go through ebbs and flows in the quantity of our communication, and it never takes long for us to feel the change. We can both sense the gap forming between us, even if it’s just a little one. It’s been said that quantity time is a prerequisite for quality time.

The month is half over, so it’s time to check in on the poll and remind you to vote.

It’s good to see so many of you make significant time to talk with your spouses. Things ebb and flow with Kerri and me depending on how busy life is, but rarely are we out of touch with each other. Before it ever goes to far one of us will say something, and we’ll clear the calendar for a few days to reconnect.

June Marriage Poll – Mid-Month Update

Well, it seems that the results of the poll are fairly conclusive. Most seem to be with the person that they believe to be their true love. I’m not surprised by that. Maybe just because I’m a romantic, or maybe because I’ve been successfully brainwashed by Hallmark and Hollywood. Either way, that’s me.

Still, there are a significant number of voters who think that the “love of your life” concept doesn’t matter, or that they know that the love of their life is/was someone else. I’m not sure how I process that bit. I think the first, that it doesn’t matter, fits in a lot with Bald Man’s reading of A History of Marriage. Romantic reasons for marriage, in the context of the entire known history of marriage, is only a recent phenomenon.

The second group, who know that the love of their life was someone else, both intrigues and saddens me, and leaves me with tons of questions. Why aren’t you married to the love of your life? Did he/she die? Were you forced to marry someone else? Did he/she marry someone else? Were you already married when you met him/her? Again, seems like Hollywood does have its claws into me. Certainly there must be a tragic epic behind the reasons that someone would be without the love of their life!

Anyway, I guess I’ll just have to live with my questions for now. Or else ponder them into a novel or something.

Thanks to everyone who voted in last month’s poll. Results are below, and I guess there isn’t anything that surprises me too much. The 5-10 and “No kids” sections are higher than I anticipated, but too askew. Kerri and I were in the 2-5 year category. We got married in 1997, and Samantha was born in 2001. My only caution to those who are planning on waiting several years: Just because you’re ready, it doesn’t mean you get pregnant. It took us about 18 months before we got pregnant. When you wait to start trying, you set a lower limit… not an upper one.

The May poll will be up sometime this week, so come back and vote again.
