The conception of two people living together for twenty-five years without having a cross word suggests a lack of spirit only to be admired in sheep.

One of the first things a relationship therapist learns is that couples argue to burn up energy that could be used for something else.
The conception of two people living together for twenty-five years without having a cross word suggests a lack of spirit only to be admired in sheep.
~ Alan Patrick Herbert

One of the first things a relationship therapist learns is that couples argue to burn up energy that could be used for something else. In fact, arguments often serve the purpose of using up energy, so that the couple do not have to take the courageous, creative leap into an unknown they fear. Arguing serves the function of being a zone of familiarity into which you can retreat when you are afraid of making a creative breakthrough.

Well, it seems that the results of the poll are fairly conclusive. Most seem to be with the person that they believe to be their true love. I’m not surprised by that. Maybe just because I’m a romantic, or maybe because I’ve been successfully brainwashed by Hallmark and Hollywood. Either way, that’s me.

{democracy:9}

Still, there are a significant number of voters who think that the “love of your life” concept doesn’t matter, or that they know that the love of their life is/was someone else. I’m not sure how I process that bit. I think the first, that it doesn’t matter, fits in a lot with Bald Man’s reading of A History of Marriage. Romantic reasons for marriage, in the context of the entire known history of marriage, is only a recent phenomenon.

The second group, who know that the love of their life was someone else, both intrigues and saddens me, and leaves me with tons of questions. Why aren’t you married to the love of your life? Did he/she die? Were you forced to marry someone else? Did he/she marry someone else? Were you already married when you met him/her? Again, seems like Hollywood does have its claws into me. Certainly there must be a tragic epic behind the reasons that someone would be without the love of their life!

Anyway, I guess I’ll just have to live with my questions for now. Or else ponder them into a novel or something.

Thanks to all who participated in the poll. It is so much appreciated. Look for a new poll coming up soon.

I like this one.
Many marriages would be better if the husband and the wife clearly understood that they are on the same side.
Zig Ziglar

That’s a common mantra for Bald Man and me. When we’re in the midst of stress and frustration, all one of us has to say is, “We’re on the same team…remember?”, and that tends to make any burden so much more bearable.

Behind every successful man stands a surprised mother-in-law.
Marriage is the process of finding out what kind of person your spouse would have really preferred.

Do you know what it means to come home at night to a woman who’ll give you a little love, a little affection, a little tenderness? It means you’re in the wrong house, that’s what it means.”

Marriage, like money, is still with us; and, like money, progressively devalued.
~Robert Graves
Someone once asked me why women don’t gamble as much as men do, and I gave the common-sensical reply that we don’t have as much money. That was a true but incomplete answer. In fact, women’s total instinct for gambling is satisfied by marriage.

~Gloria Steinem
