According to Dr. Barry Sears, creator of the Zone Diet,

“Manuel’s ability to lose more than 400 pounds without resorting to weight loss surgery is a remarkable accomplishment.
I’m interested to know what foods “stabilize the hormones that control hunger” and how, particularly if they are referring to leptin. As far as I know, modulation of leptin is still being studied in animal studies. I’d remain skeptic until I’ve read manuscripts on human clinical studies.

Imagine if you can fight brain cancer by simply adapting a certain diet. No, really, it’s not that far-fetched.
Scientists at Boston College said Tuesday that KetoCal, a commercially available, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet designed to treat epilepsy in children, significantly enhanced health and survival rates in animal studies.
“KetoCal represents a novel alternative therapy for malignant brain cancer,” said Tom Seyfried, professor of biology. “While the tumors did not vanish in the mice who received the strict KetoCal diet, they got significantly smaller and the animals lived significantly longer.”

“KetoCal represents a novel alternative therapy for malignant brain cancer,” said Tom Seyfried, professor of biology. “While the tumors did not vanish in the mice who received the strict KetoCal diet, they got significantly smaller and the animals lived significantly longer.”

According to its manufacturer, Nutricia North America, KetoCal is a “<nutritionally complete, powdered product, which can be used to administer the classical (4:1) Ketogenic diet for children over 1 year of age". The KetoCal diet appears to starve the brain tumor cells of glucose which they need for growth and survival, but at the same time, provides normal brain cells with ketones, a class of organic compounds they can metabolize effectively but the tumor cells cannot.
