Check Out These New Mental Health Blogs

Check Out These New Mental Health Blogs

Well, they’re not all new, per se, but they’re some of the mental health blogs I’ve been checking out lately.
Recovering One Day At A Time is written by maryruth, a seriously busy American woman (she’s a single mother of four, a homeschooler to her special needs son, a writer, a NAMI advocate, and she just started working on her Master’s in Psychology!) who wants to share her “walk through mental illness to recovery.”
I’m Listening is written by “Wandering Coyote,” a Canadian lady who’s managing borderline personality disorder, dysthymia, and major depressive disorder and who seeks to bust the stigma of …read more

NAMI Presents Schizophrenia: Public Attitudes, Personal Needs

NAMI Presents Schizophrenia: Public Attitudes, Personal Needs

During Celebrity Health Week, I wrote two posts about schizophrenia: Celebrities and Schizophrenia and Tell Me More about Schizophrenia: Signs, Symptoms, and Treatments.
However, had I known about NAMI’s Schizophrenia: Public Attitudes, Personal Needs Web site I would have definitely included it.
The Web site:

Gives a summary of the schizophrenia survey. For example, did you know an average time period of eight and a half years passes between the time a person’s schizophrenia symptoms first surface until the time the person first receives schizophrenia treatment? You can also see the methodology of the survey.
Provides an analysis section, broken down into three parts …read more

Update: Senate And House Reach Historic Agreement On Mental Health Parity

Update: Senate And House Reach Historic Agreement On Mental Health Parity

From the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance Action Alert I received last night:
We are delighted to announce that the Senate and the House negotiators have reached a historic agreement on the Mental Health Parity compromise bill. Since early March, when the Senate passed its own version of the bill, S. 558, the House and Senate have been engaged in intense negotiations to reconcile differences between the two bills. (The House bill, H.R. 1424 – passed in early March).
Now the bill must go for one more, final vote in both chambers and then goes to the President for his signature.
You are …read more

Saturday Sanity: Let’s Catch Up!

Saturday Sanity: Let’s Catch Up!

Because Celebrity Health Week was winding down, we didn’t have Saturday Sanity last Saturday.
Let’s see if we can get caught up, shall we?

This week at Mental Health Notes, I spent most of my time trying to get away from the topic of celebrities. I shared with you a study regarding the aroma of coffee and your brain, talked about the governor of Virginia’s decision to take a mentally ill inmate off death row, updated you on Pfizer’s defense of Chantix, discussed a study involving heavy marijuana use and brain size, and discussed another study involving the similarities in the brains …read more

Pfizer Defends Chantix, But Warns Of Mood And Behavior Changes

Pfizer Defends Chantix, But Warns Of Mood And Behavior Changes

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, Inc. has gotten some seriously negative press regarding Chantix, the drug that’s supposed to help people stop smoking.
For example, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices and the Food and Drug Administration both made similar reports dealing with a link between Chantix and suicide, seizures, and traffic accidents, airline pilots and air-traffic controllers have been federally banned from using Chantix, and across the Internet, everyday folks are reporting the negative mental side effects of Chantix (try Can Chantix Cause Depression?, Are Chantix Side Effects Worth the Risk?, and one woman’s story about her daughter’s “hellish experience”).
Neither the …read more

Celebrity Health Week Comes To A Close

Celebrity Health Week Comes To A Close

Celebrity Health Week is over, and boy, and I glad.
Actually, Celebrity Health Week was technically over on Saturday, but as last week was quite eventful for me away from the computer, my own Celebrity Health Week posts carried over to early this morning.
I also opted to cut some of the posts out of the original Celebrity Health Week schedule. Honestly, given the busy week I had and the fact that I was just getting tired of writing about celebrities and mental health, I decided to cut myself some slack. It’s as simple as that.
Sure, I have, from time to time, …read more

Tell Me More About Suicide: Risks, Warning Signs, and Resources

Tell Me More About Suicide: Risks, Warning Signs, and Resources

This post is part of Celebrity Health Week at the b5media Health & Wellness Channel. For more information about Celebrity Health Week posts here at Mental Health Notes, visit Introducing Celebrity Health Week: Celebrities And Mental Illness.
We’ve taken a look at famous people who have attempted suicide, as well as celebrities who committed suicide, so let’s now look at suicide itself: some of the causes of suicide, warning signs of suicide, and resources for people considering suicide.
Please keep in mind that this post is just an overview – and a brief one at that – and by no means meant …read more

Funny Google Video On Herd Behavior

Funny Google Video On Herd Behavior

This video from Google Video is too funny not to share:
I’m not sure where it originates – it’s obviously a clip from a pretty old show, instructional video, or something of that nature. The video description merely reads:
This is a comic video that illustrates the influence that a group behavior has on an individual.
As I was watching the video, I had to ask myself what would I have done in that situation? At first, I thought, “There’s no way I would keep turning around and facing different directions like that in an elevator!” However, after thinking more about it, I …read more

A Mental Health Notes Call For Entries

A Mental Health Notes Call For Entries

If you’ll look to the right and scroll down a bit, you’ll see the Mental Health Notes blogroll. (Ignore the sections called “Helpful Websites” and “Other Great Blogs” – those are going to vanish soon.)
Pretty pathetic, huh? Especially given that there are several Mental Health Notes readers who have mental health-related blogs of their own. That list should be much longer, but, unfortunately, I’m not aware of everyone’s mental health-related Web sites and blogs.
That’s why I’ve decided to conduct a “call for entries” of sorts. Intrigued? Of course you are. Read on for details.
