Sandusky Sentence Is 30 – 60 Years; We Hope It Raises The Bar For Child Sex Abuse Prosecution

Sandusky Sentence Is 30 - 60 Years; We Hope It Raises The Bar For Child Sex Abuse Prosecution

The Jerry Sandusky sentence came this morning, and the former Penn State assistant football coach got 30 to 60 years on 45 counts of child sex abuse. At 68 years old, that’s basically a life sentence, despite his sustained denial of all “the horrible things” he’s been accused of, and frankly, we’re glad it’s so severe. Now we just hope that other child sex abuse (and sexual assault in general) will start to get similar treatment. More »

Hiring A Personal Trainer Helped Me Ditch My Eating Disorder

Hiring A Personal Trainer Helped Me Ditch My Eating Disorder

I’ve been a perfectionist since long before I had any other issues, though anxiety, depression and crippling self doubt eventually followed. I had disordered eating patterns well before I had body image issues, though now they have been intertwined for some time. And for me, part of my support network, part of finding my way back out of my impulses to control my food, part of my recovery, involved hiring a trainer. More »

A Rebuttal To XOJane's 'Anonymous Actress' Against Adderall

Man. Between doped-up NASCAR drivers, the New York Times and certain platinum blond bloggers, Adderall is getting a crazy bum rap these days. Women Get Naked To Raise Awareness: PTSD In The Military Edition

Here at Blisstree, we’ve talked a whole lot about a certain organization’s use of naked women to stir controversy and thereby raise awareness for a cause. To be fair, they’ve given us a lot to talk about.

Now, another organization is taking a page out of PETA’s playbook and using naked women to gain attention for their cause. But I have to admit, I find this example so much more depressing than PETA’s blatant attempts to get press. This time, the women stripping down are military wives and their doing so to raise awareness about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. More »

Why Weight Loss Has Little To Do With What You Eat

Why Weight Loss Has Little To Do With What You Eat

Therapist, author and eating disorders expert, Dr. Judi Hollis makes an attention-getting argument in her new book, From Bagels to Buddha, How I Found My Soul and Lost My Fat. She says permanent weight loss has very little to do with what you eat. Instead, as she discovered personally on her journey to losing 70 pounds and keeping them off, it’s not about changing your diet at all. Go inward, clean up your act, and that will clean up your eating, she says. More »

Workouts as Therapy: Why Boot Camps Are Good For More Than Your Booty

Workouts as Therapy: Why Boot Camps Are Good For More Than Your Booty

Studies prove that physical activity can improve mental health, but it’s not just because you’re burning calories and fitting into your favorite jeans. Lacey Stone, trainer, fitness instructor, and founder of BOOTYcamp, explains: “I think it’s really important that people realize how important the mental side of fitness is if they want to be successful long-term.” But that doesn’t mean you have to pack up and head to an ashram for daily yoga and spiritual enlightenment; you can still get plenty of of emotional and mental rewards from your workouts.
