My Abortion Was A Procedure, My Miscarriage A Loss

My Abortion Was A Procedure, My Miscarriage A Loss

As long as I can remember I have been staunchly pro-choice. And so when a broken condom led to an unwanted pregnancy, having an abortion was a no brainer for me.

I was young and single, a student who practiced safe sex and believed in a woman’s right to choose. When my period was late and my pregnancy test turned up positive, I immediately called my doctor and scheduled a D&C.

My mother drove me to the health clinic. When we arrived, anti-choice protesters hurled abuse at us before a nurse led us through the doors. A sonogram confirmed I was about five weeks pregnant. I looked at the image and saw a circle about the size of a pencil dot. I was given a local anesthetic and some nitrous oxide and, within minutes, the procedure was over. An hour or so later I was discharged. More »

9 Totally Inspiring Women Who Have Had A Miscarriage

9 Totally Inspiring Women Who Have Had A Miscarriage

Miscarriage is a pretty common experience to both mothers and women. Yet, despite the universality, the mishaps continues to get garbled in awkward, yet empathetic condolences from family and friends. The “it wasn’t meant to be” and “at least it was early on” have been pouring salt on the wounds of women who have miscarried for centuries, as from Anne Boleyn to Bethenny Frankel — a lot of women have been there. And while each mother and lady as the right to mourn her miscarriage on her terms, the loss of a child or what could have been a child has been a significant part of the lives of some very notable ladies. From 16th century history to the silver screen to powerful singers, women of all walks have lived through the disappointment– and kept going. More »

Georgia Abortion Bill Passes With Compromise (Sort Of) Acknowledging Women Aren’t Livestock

Georgia Abortion Bill Passes With Compromise (Sort Of) Acknowledging Women Aren't Livestock

In Georgia, a bill intended to prohibit abortions after 20 weeks has passed both the state House and Senate. Speaking in support of the bill—officially HR 954, but referred to by lawmakers as the ‘fetal pain bill’ and opponents as the ‘women as livestock‘ bill—state Rep. Terry England compared pregnant women pigs and cows. The final, compromise bill allows for abortion after 20 weeks in cases where a fetus had “profound and irremediable’ anomalies that would be ‘incompatible with sustaining life after birth.’

Snooki Shouldn’t Have To Justify Hiding Her Pregnancy For 3 Months

Snooki Shouldn't Have To Justify Hiding Her Pregnancy For 3 Months

I don’t think we should be so quick to judge Snooki for lying about her pregnancy last month. Sure, it’s getting to be old hat, celebrities hiding personal news until they can strike deals with entertainment tabloids (or drug companies). From Kim Kardashian’s TV wedding to Paula Deen’s belated diabetes announcement, fans are starting to feel unfairly manipulated. Now that it’s come out that Snooki is three months along—and has brokered a Us Weekly cover to announce the news—the general reaction has been cynicism. But there are legitimate reasons not to reveal a pregnancy right away. More »

My Miscarriage Taught Me To Stand Up Against My Doctors

My Miscarriage Taught Me To Stand Up Against My Doctors

For the past six months, I’ve been chronicling my family’s struggle with secondary infertility on Blisstree’s sister-site, Mommyish. It’s been a long, emotional journey filled with plenty of frustration and more than a couple tears. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for nineteen months and counting. This December, I prepared to write a good-bye to my weekly posts on in vitro fertilization and fertility clinic drama. Finally, miraculously, joyously… we were pregnant. I was so ecstatic that I simply didn’t know how to hold it in. At seven weeks along, I shared the good news with my family and some co-workers. It was just before the holidays and my life seemed to be one big cloud of optimism and hope: At long last, I was pregnant and I simply couldn’t contain it. More »

Photos Of Michelle Duggar’s Miscarried Baby Don’t Belong On The Internet

Photos Of Michelle Duggar's Miscarried Baby Don't Belong On The Internet

Michelle Duggar, who was pregnant with her 20th child and suffered a miscarriage last week, held a memorial service yesterday for her unborn child. As part of that service, the family displayed photos of the dead baby. Some may find that disturbing or horrifying, but I personally find it touching and a good reminder that an unborn child is still a life and someone to be mourned over if she dies. Although, these photos should be kept off the Internet and be kept private. More »

Michelle Duggar Suffers Miscarriage; But She’s Not Too Old For Another Baby

Michelle Duggar Suffers Miscarriage; But She's Not Too Old For Another Baby

Sad news for Michelle Duggar and her family. The 45-year-old reality star who was pregnant with her 20th child, found out yesterday that she had a miscarriage. This probably comes as no surprise to some who said all along that she was too old for another baby. Even one commenter on the Today show said her uterus “can’t have any spring in it anymore”. But is 45 really too old to have a baby? The odds may be lower, but it’s still possible–and people shouldn’t judge her for that. More »

Health Lessons From Jane Pratt: Miscarriage Is Normal, and You Shouldn’t Presume to Talk About Women’s Breasts

Health Lessons From Jane Pratt: Miscarriage Is Normal, and You Shouldn't Presume to Talk About Women's Breasts

Once I got into a fight with my friend over who was better: Madonna or Kylie Minogue. I argued Madonna, and in her defense I pointed out that Kylie Minogue was totally MIA while Madonna was still going strong. “She has CANCER!” my friend shamed my argument while laughing at my ignorant faux pas. Jane Pratt, founding editor of Sassy, Jane, and the new blog xoJane, is calling out her critics in exactly the same way in a post that she published today: “Why My Boobs Are Huge.” It wasn’t plastic surgery paid for by her (non-extant) husband that made her cleavage stand out in a press photo taken years ago, but a miscarriage of five-month-old twins – so there, rude commenters, now who feels dumb? But her blog post doesn’t just shut up the galleys; it teaches an important but oft-shushed health lesson for women in their adult years: Miscarriages are common, and conceiving children can be tough. 6 Ill-Conceived Abortion Methods From Ancient Times: A Photo Gallery

Long before there were surgical instruments, Vera Drake, back alleys, wire hangers, Roe v. Wade, abortion clinic bombings, the March for Life, and the most divisive issue ever to hit the U.S. Congress, ancient (and archaic) doctors had their own (often barbaric) ideas about how to perform the ever-controversial abortion. Check out our gallery of 6 of the most primitive and absurd methods used during ancient times to terminate an unwanted pregnancy: More »
