“The galley comes equipped with cooktop, stainless sink, Elkay faucet, fridge-freezer, Nelson Ball Clock and four Heller Dinnerware place settings. There are recessed halogen lights, a skylight and the Wire Coatrack by Tom Dixon. There’s also a lavatory and shower. The eco-friendly flooring has a matte ebony finish and the glossy overhead lockers are backlit and have metal perforated laminate doors. The panoramic windows have custom aluminum window treatments imported from Europe. For leisurely times outdoors, a fabric awning and two Tripolina Chairs are included. There are Matteo linens and a Maharam Pillow, and the electronics package includes rooftop AC, Sony sound system and TV.”

Live Like A Gypsy

The UNICAT is an RV / off-road vehicle. So with your very own UNICAT you could travel the country and still get to many of those off the beaten path places. Plus it just looks slick.

My New Rolling House – the UNICAT

So, this isn’t even a new car – I’m slower than slow about cars. Structures I get; cars, um, not so much. People are actually surprised when I can pump my own gas. (I grew up in Oregon). I really just like this car for the livability aspects. However, this is a cool green choice of an automobile, that much I do know. You can read all about it at ZerCustoms.

Not an offbeat house at all…

Now, can you guess what it does, without reading further? Of course, if you’ve seen this you’d know, so I’m talking to the folks who’ve missed this sweet house.

It rotates! Plus it’s green.

DOPE UPDATE: So, I just realized that one, I said, “Hey guess what this house does?” Then I realized that my title, “Rotating Solar Torch of A House” may have given that away (duh). Lordy. Still it’s too funny to edit. I’ll leave it all.

The solar-collecting array on top actually follows the sun, thus maximizing solar capture. Pretty slick. Some bloggers have noted that it’s a little extreme. I sort of like it though. I love how it looks like a torch you could hold.

Best. Mansion. Ever.

So of course I get all obsessive (this is a slick home) and proceed to surf through tons and tons of this guy’s flickr pages – he has a lot. Why, well, I’ll get to that in a minute. In any case, I spent far too long surfing through his pictures; which are all so great. Real slices of life – not stodgy photos at all. I like reality and his photos are exactly that.

How great is this house? It’s in Michigan, which is odd because it reminds me of a house I saw in Minnesota, on one of my road trips which isn’t far off.

The fellow I mentioned above (the one with all the cool flickr pages) shot it as part of his Hometown Invasion Tour – which is pretty neat in itself. This guy, Justin (aka Bugsy) has a website called The Hometown Invasion; I think Justin sums it up better, and faster, then I would so here you go; from his homepage:

“From Sep 8, 2006 to Sep 17, 2007 my friend Rice (the first squirrel to go to all 50 states) and I (Bugsy) have traveled 29,403 miles as we made our way to all 50 states in the nation staying in over 100 U.S. households. These are the photos and stories that made an incredible year.”

Neat… I want to go on a road trip like this! Justin blogs about his adventures too. ONLY visit the blog if you have lots and lots of free time. I stayed a long time. It was really interesting. According to his blog he’s either on the road again or considering it; it was sort of hard to tell. Still, it’s a fun site, and a great read with amazing photos. Very much worth a look.

Teepee House & Road Trips

Hmmm, you know I probably could have thought of a much better contest name. Ah well. To make up for my sad, sad, naming abilities why not enjoy a small piece of the great outdoors. From your mobile cow camper home.

Tell me again why this is necessary? I mean other then the fact that it makes a great camper for Offbeat Homes it must be such a bother to clean. Although, I bet kids driving past it on the road LOVE it.
Props to the lovely Maricar from Keeping the Castle for sending me this moo worthy camper. In fact, right now, Maricar has some great kooky gadgets that would fit right in at your offbeat home; so why not visit?

Did Anyone Else Forget About the Contest?

N55 the creative minds behind the snail shell system note that this system, “Can easily be placed in a discreet way. It can be buried in the ground, exposing only the entrance. It can also function as a comfortable space inside existing buildings.” There’s quite a lot more to this structure which you can read about at the N55 website.

From the website; “The bilge pump (on the left) can be used as a vacuum cleaner as well as for pumping water. Combined with hoses and a flexible tank, it works as a shower… The box (on the right) contains a torch, hoses for the pump, kitchen pan, kettle and alcohol burner, foldable water containers that can be used for ballasting as well as for shower and drinking water, and plastic bags.”

The Walking House

N55 has created so many interesting items — all related to space, how we use space, and living. They have inflatable, floating, and other innovative homes. I recommend setting aside an hour or so and cruising through all of their manuals. It’s well worth the time.

What could you use this for? Camping, living as a wanderer, in the old days maybe a Dead show or two.
