Ye gods… how did I get so far behind this month? Oh yeah… Crazy cool BBQ on top of a big project at the day job. Such is life. Anyway, let’s see if we can’t find a few quick hits to remind you I’m still here. Hmm…

How about this story about Woodville Elementary and their fund raiser for Angel Hair for Kids? The sixth grade class put on a dramatic skit, they held a $2 raffle of sorts to help shave a teachers head, and willing students could get their own head shaved for a $5 donation. In all, the school raised $1300 for Angel Hair for Kids.

But wait! Let’s back up to the start and meet Sydney Steele, a second grader who earlier in the year had decided to donate her hair to help other children who had lost theirs. It seems her story of charity spread through the ranks like wildfire, and it turned into a school-wide event.

“A child shall lead them…” I think I’ve read that somewhere.

Angel Hair for Kids is a part of A Child’s Voice Foundation, a charitable organization in Canada “dedicated to support and enhance the physical and emotional well being of less fortunate children in Canada.”

Jane Cohen has a lovely story in The Mirror about 8-year old Nikkita Gibson and her mom Louise, both of whom have alopecia. “I wish I had her courage. I still don’t feel comfortable going out without a wig.” Take the moment and read their story.
UPDATE: GMTV has another story focusing on Nikkita and Louise.

Happy Birthday, Hannah Goldsberry! The young woman turned 16 recently, and on Friday she commemorated the occasion with a haircut… her first since the third grade! Hannah, whose hair was well past her waist, now sports a shoulder length cut.
Her 16-inch long ponytail is being donated to Locks of Love in memory of her grandmother. “My grandma died of cancer, and I wanted to give my hair to little kids so they don’t have to go through that.” She didn’t say what she would be doing with all the extra time not spent washing, drying and styling the long hair [...]
Post from: Blisstree

Topeka Deputy Fire Chief Dave Sterbenz shaved his head after members of Firefighters Local 83 raised $1,600 for the Arthritis Foundation. This surpassed Sterbenz original challenge of $500. By my calculation that would work out to about $1 per hair on my head.
The local news station has a short Quicktime video clip of the actual shaving.

This morning, let’s check in on Alyssa Stabile from the Grand Rapids, Michigan area.
Alyssa, a sixth-grader at Jenison Junior High School, recently enlisted the help of about 30 schoolmates who agreed to donate their hair to Locks of Love…. Alyssa said she was inspired to organize the event because her mom, Lori, is undergoing treatment for breast cancer and lost her hair as a side effect to the chemotherapy.
Those 30 ponytails will make between three and five wigs. Way to go Alyssa!

Hair is not as important as I thought it was. Doing what feels right for me is.
My baldness is my badge of courage. Look at me! I’m fighting cancer! Join me in the fight!
When I look in the mirror, I don’t see my shiny head, I see me. And my family. And my friends. Living a long, healthy and happy life.

The Union, out of Nevada County, California, is running an editorial by high school senior Lindsay Adams.

Lindsay was diagnosed with alopecia as a seventh-grader. Though her hair has returned as a result of favorable steroid treatments, she has chosen to title her senior project Creating Awareness of Alopecia. “I want individuals in our community, especially children, who may be experiencing the same type of hair loss as I did to know that there is no need to suffer in silence as the disease progresses.” I’m proud of her for remembering and reaching forward.

Lindsay’s website is www.adamsfamilyusa.com/alopecia/.

At a time in a child’s life when “fitting in” is of utmost importance, and appearance is really that by which your peers judge you, losing your hair can be devastating.

When a person is just beginning to develop who they are and deciding what they want to be in life, losing hair seems like losing your identity.

What 12-year-old girl has the confidence and self-esteem to lose half the hair on her head and still “fit in” with the other kids at school?

OK, let’s do a Monday Afternoon Warm Fuzzy, too. It is the Easter season, and that’s enough reason for me so celebrate acts of kindness and generosity… especially acts performed by kids. Here’s an article from the OC Register about Sami:
Seven-year-old Sami Kreeger bounced up and down in the oversized chair, smiling from ear to ear. She had waited for this day for more than two years.
Then, with two quick snips it was over, and a foot of Sami’s waist-long hair was gone.
She gasped, burst into laughter, and beamed at her mom, grandma and grandpa.
“That felt good,” she giggled.
