Since I have started blogging and scrapbooking in late 2003, I have made it a habit to write a post about a family memory. I try on the occasion of the birthday of my daughter to write her a letter summarizing what she’s done for the year, how I’m feeling at that time. I hope to be able to use these as journaling for future scrapbook layouts.

What I’m also hoping to be able to do is to compile all my blog posts about my daughter into a book using Scrapblog’s custom printing or maybe just print all my posts about her to give to her at the eve of her wedding or when she moves out of the family home to start a life on her own. I’d want my daughter to have a physical reminder of what we have gone through as a family that she can carry with her to read over and over and to help her remember us long after we’ve departed this world.

If you haven’t done so, I encourage every parent to start a journal for their children. The effect is so cathartic. Such release. I also love re-reading things I wrote about my daughter’s antics from 5 years ago or a family holiday that was so enjoyable. If you’re uncomfortable about writing something so personal online, you can have a private journal in your computer or use a good ol’ physical journal to write on.

As an example of a tribute letter, here’s one I wrote to my daughter, Bea on the occasion of her 12th birthday which I hope you will enjoy reading!

IMG: Sxc.hu

First, I heard from SoccerBoy that they were getting me some Mother’s Day Gifts. Okay, this didn’t mean dad was going out and spending money on me but the kids themselves were and they were also making me things at school. To be honest I thought it would be painted handprints with poems. I was shocked this morning when my oldest two presented me with ceramics they’d made in art class. Wow, this stuff was impressive. (I’ll take a pic in a day or two.) This meant a lot to me, it showed that they took the time to make me something from the heart.

Knowing her siblings were making me stuff, BabyGirl (age 5) did as well but also asked that I give her a few dollars the next time we went to the store. I figured out why and did so. She was so excited when she handed me a stuffed bear today. This will be the one Mother’s Day I never forget.

What happens when your child comes home from school, holding a Father’s Day gift that he made in class, without a father to give it to? Do you simply tell him that he needs to throw it away, because he doesn’t have a father? Do you get angry at the teacher for being so insensitive to the kids who do not have fathers? Do you suggest giving the gift to another man who your child looks up to?

I’m wondering these things because it is a reality that many American families have to deal with, every June. With divorce rates and teen pregnancies so high, many families are left without a father. I’m curious to know how they deal with a day like Father’s Day and the void that so many children must feel. I know that the absence of a father is something that single mothers deal with year round, but certainly, it must be worse on a day designated to celebrate a man who (in their situation) doesn’t care to be around or has passed away.

If this situation applies to you, please let me know your opinion on the topic. I know it must be difficult to deal with and I feel empathy for those who fall under this category. I myself, have had a hard time with Father’s Day since my parent’s divorced and my dad moved so far away. Furthermore, my Grandpa (who became my father figure after the divorce) went to heaven in February. It will be a tough day for me, as I will be delivering my Grandpa’s card to his grave. I am blessed, however, to be able to celebrate the wonderful father that my husband is to my children. Many are not so blessed. To all of you who will live through tomorrow, fatherless, my prayers and thought are with you.

That is an undeniable fact. Yes, we can be tough in our methods. Yes, we are judgmental. It is part of our job, here at GP. It is what sets us aside from some moms, but also what gives a commonality to others. No matter what brand of parenting you subscribe to, every mom deserves to be honored on Mother’s Day. I hope that you all had a wonderful day with your family and that you were made to feel like the special creature that you are. I know I was. Here is my photo journal of my own Mother’s Day. It is proof that even tough mommies are loved and respected by their children.
