Puppets can be anything from the smallest, simplest little creations to the elaborate full-body suits that the Jim Henson Workshop created for the new hit movie, “Where The Wild Things Are”:

Vanity Fair actually got to take a look inside the Henson workshop to see how the massive puppets were created.  The design process began with sketches and small maquettes before the huge puppets could be built.

The monster suits ended up being between eight and nine feet tall, covered in a combination of yak hair and specially-made synthetic “fur”.  The creators used a combination of foams and lycra fabric to make layers of muscles that would move realistically under all that fur.

Can you imagine all the incredibly goodies that the designers had access too?  Oh my goodness…

Now the only trouble is they have to find their way back to their time. Can they do it?

Transformers 2: Revenge (June 24)- You saw the first Transformers and loved it. Why would you ever miss the second one? I hear this one is suppose to be better than the last one and we all know they’ll have to really figure out how Shia, aka Sam, hurts his hand. Remember his real accident crushed his hand late last year during the filming of the show. With the “Revenge” we’ll get to see how the Transformers defend the Universe this time and not just the states.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (July 17)- I don’t think there is a need to go into this one. Who doesn’t know what’s happening? Will Harry live for another show and which person will actually die?

Ice Age 3: The Dawn of the Dinosaurs 3D- Ellie and Manny from “The Meltdown” fell in love and are now expecting a little one of their own. Sid ventures out to find a kid of his own and ends up stealing dinosaur eggs. Course we all know what happens when someone steals someone’s baby…there’s going to be one very mad momma and probably a lot of funny adventures in dealing with this egg. Will you be there?

Top 5 Summer Movies for Kids

I am a fan of Mariah Carey. It seems to me that people either love Maiah Carey or they hate her. I think she’s talented, beautiful, an individual.

I read that she’s in a movie, “Precious,”that was well-received at Cannes. The piece I read talked about how she’s not Mariah-like in the role. That she is “dowdy.”

Whatever, she still looks beautiful to me.

I watched the movie trailer and it made me cry. Not just a few tears. I mean cry-cry. At one point the title character is saying that no one loves her and she is in agony. I can remember feeling like that before and it’s horrible to feel that low. Just soul-sucking agony. I can remember feeling absolutely unlovable. Nobody should ever feel that way.

I’m afraid to watch the whole movie. It looks incredible and honestly I feel my point of view has changed just from watching the trailer, so I should see it, but it’s hard to watch that sort of raw pain. Some actors make a scene all too real. They have the ability to transport a person. The star of this movie, Gabourey Sidibe, she has that gift.

The movie is about a young woman and her relationships. I had not heard of it before today and I wanted you readers to be aware of it, to watch for it.

Precious Movie – Mariah Carey

Of course, the joke is on me for not asking if it was, and now I know for the immediate future, until I actually am wired, I will be going to the movies a lot…good thing the Tribeca Film Festival is upon us!

I feel like a look at the movies being shown is a great indicator of where the universe is on the subject of love. Some examples of the summaries of movie options at your fingertips:

TIMER: It’s a brave new world where a  bio-technological implant called the TiMER counts down to the exact time people meet their soul mates.Love-starved Oona (Emma Caulfield, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is pushing 30, and she’s falling for a guy (John Patrick Amedori, Gossip Girl) who is set to meet his true love in four months. Basically, this movie asks the burning question… would you want to know? I wouldn’t!

The Exploding Girl: Ivy is back home in Brooklyn for spring break with her longtime platonic guy pal Al in tow. As her relationship with her boyfriend slowly disintegrates via cell phone, Al’s friendship is cast in a new light.

Stay Cool: Henry returns home to give the commencement speech at his high school. But even after almost 20 years, it’s as if he never left – he again wants the girl, gets suspended by the principal, and is grounded by his parents.

The Girlfriend Experience:Five days in the life of a $2,000-an-hour Manhattan call girl (adult film star Sasha Grey) who thinks she has her life totally under control. She even has a devoted boyfriend who accepts her lifestyle!

Serious Moonlight: Meg Ryan arrives at her country nest for a little R and R only to discover that her husband has been cheating on her with the hotter and younger Sarah.

My Last Five Girlfriends: A fun romantic comedy explores with delicious wit and whimsy just how modern urban relationships go wrong. Surveying the wreckage of his last five relationships, thirtysomething Duncan (Brendan Patricks) concludes that love is a battleground where only the fittest survive.

Woah: Life IS just like the movies. At the risk of sounding totally cliche…see any good movies lately? Or, more importantly, any that reflect you own crazy dating life?

Love Is in the Air (and the Movies!)

Truman has had a slight curiosity about monsters even before the movie. He wants to know where monsters live. (He suggested Brazil, which is also what he says is his favorite country.) He wonders if they are hiding in the bathroom or in the dark corners of his room. He sleeps with his bathroom light on.

My husband tries to rationalize with him. He tells Truman that monsters aren’t real and he has nothing to be afraid of. Save the Day with Monster Spray!

Barbara Walter’s Audition:

This book is written from the dry, poker-faced stance of a neutral journalist. Which is great if you’re reporting for 20/20, but it’s not the tone you want to take when you’re reporting your own life. In spite of that it’s a knock-out. Barbara Walters has lived some kind of life. It’s also a first-person view of history as told by someone who was there. By there, I mean, in the room and asking the questions. The first woman in journalism has a personal opinion of our recent history. Oh, and she’s also to blame for first exploiting our interest in sex. She discovered when writing press releases for a PR firm that the public responds to sex in a headline every single time and thus she can be seen as the impetus for the sexualization of the media. Thanks Barbara.

Sex and the City, The Movie:

Trendy fashion went overboard when the ladies look like clowns by the time the DVD comes out. I confess I watched this movie with my husband, so I may have been more willing to see how ridiculous the uber-fashion was but, seriously – since when are shoulder pads and 80s power suits back? It’s like every fashion designer who bought product placement in the movie barfed all over these four.

Samantha Jones has to be the epitome of SAD and pathetic. When she leaves the one guy who can tolerate her self-absorption and celebrates her 50th birthday alone so she can screw it was a sad, sad moment in feminist pop culture. That’s powerful? No. Happy women have grandchildren at 50 or 60. Monogamous sex only gets better cause you stop pretending you’re the star of a porno movie.

Carrie Bradshaw is a complete idiot. You’re SURPRISED that Mr. Big screwed you over on your wedding day cause he’s commitment phobic? Really? Where have you been? Meanwhile Aiden is the perfect father of 4 working on his craft and spending time with his wife. You get what you settle for – reduced to a 3rd wife’s wedding dress in Cinderella’s shoes. Please see my article Cinderella Could Have Saved Herself. Let me add – by not marrying a selfish dick.

I enjoyed the story-lines of Charlotte and Miranda Hobbs. Charlotte pooping her pants was the only parts that made me laugh out loud.

New Moon & Eclipse:

I hated the first book, Twilight, because I thought it was a great description of battered wife syndrome rather than “true love.” Everyone kept saying “read the next books, you’ll see.” So I tried. But, 3 pages in the sentimental crappola distortion of love and exaggerated teenage angst made me decide, “I don’t have time to read bad romance novels no matter how fast they are flying off the shelves.” I’m over it.

Running With Scissors:

My friend said this was a great movie so I put it on my Netflix. Annette Bennening was fun to watch. But, it was depressing. I used to watch depressing movies over and over, but then I realized it only made me . . . depressed. I need no extra downers in my life. I turned it off and watched E’s Sunday lineup of sexed-up reality television – which was no less depressing. So I went to bed with a good book.

One Fifth Avenue

Like the original Sex and the City book, this one was written by Candace Bushnell. This is a good book. It’s interesting and fun and light and entertaining. Only, unlike when I was younger and books like this made me want to seek my fortune in New York City – this one makes me want to never, ever live there again. Was New York always as shallow as L.A. and I just thought it had more depth?

A Return to Love: Reflections on a Course in Miracles

This is the best book I’ve ever read on what Love really is. It presents true love as a miracle. A gift from God. A gift to ourselves. A gift to the world. A gift to each other. It also presents love as a battle against the ego and it says love is really hard work worth doing. If you’re looking for a soulful meditation on true love – skip the juvenile romance crap of Stephanie Meyers and read this book.
