He pretty much wore them into the ground and before they were ready for the garbage, he decided to cut open the soles to see how they were put together. And while he was cutting open the soles, the knife slipped. Lets just say, thank goodness his father was home and there was an emergency room close by.

So why am I telling you all of this?? LOL… I’m just preparing all of you young mothers for what is to come. Boys do stuff like this. Like the time he rode his tricycle down a flight of stairs. That was another trip to the hospital.

It’s like they say… little boys are made of… Gee, it’s been so long, I’ve forgotten how that goes.

Fresh Makeup for Weary Moms

The only thing that worked was settling him in his stroller and taking him for a nightly walk. The night air was the only thing that would lull him to sleep. People must have thought that we were terrible parents, but it was the only thing that would settle him down. There were times when I didn’t think I would ever sleep again.

And just when he was learning how nice is was to sleep, his sister came along. While those days are well behind me, here is your chance to share stories on how to get a baby to sleep through the nights. Neither of mine slept the entire night until they were a year and a half.

Eyes Wide Open…

A few weeks ago, I suggested taking the kids and going exploring with your bikes. That was aimed at kids that were smaller than you. Well, those days are long behind me and “weary parent” couldn’t be more true.

My daughter bought herself a mountain bike last fall and now she wants her dad and I to get bikes too. And this time a park isn’t going to be good enough. She wants to go exploring. We are talking miles and miles of trails and just a few swamps too.

If nothing else, by the end of the summer, her dad and I should be in amazing shape… but that will be after the sore muscles toughen up!

Go Exploring With Big Kids

I remember a relative who had grand dreams for her children. The only problem was that they were her dreams and not the dreams of her children. She wanted her sons to be lawyers or doctors. While I can understand why she would want such wonderful professions for her children, they had no interest in what she chose. In fact, to her embarrassment, one of her sons wanted to be a garbage man. Don’t all little boys want to be Garbage Men?

Now that I look back, I think that if she had of simply gone along with his decision, he might have outgrown it. On the other hand, if he wanted to collect garbage for a living, that should have been his decision and she should have been happy that he had found something that appealed to him.

But the reverse happened. He outgrew his mom…

They Have Dreams of their Own

Teach your children that they are special and they have a multitude of talents. It might take a few times for it to sink in, but believe me it does. My son for example had learning disabilities all during his school years, and hated every minutel. But when he realized that he simply had to use a different method for learning, his attitude completely changed.

As a matter of fact, he is a hairstylist and participated at a major hair show a few weeks ago and he left a message on our answering machine. “I kicked butt!”… well those weren’t quite his words but lets just say that he was pretty pleased with himself!

So the lesson… praise them big time when they are little. It pays off!

Dull Eyeliner Pencils Hurt

Each year, my husband would always take the kids out and let them buy me whatever THEY wanted. That usually meant that I would receive two big bottles of soda and two big bags of potato chips. But there was a year when my son was old enough to walk up the lane to the variety store all by himself and he excitedly bought me a pair of cracked gray candles with his own money. I’m thinking that the price was right

He was so proud of himself and just couldn’t wait for me to open them. Luckily Moms have this built in ability to look surprised and extremely pleased when they open up gifts from their kids. And this one took some doing It’s the kind of gift that you stare at for a minute or so before you know quite what to say! But just one look at his face said it all. I instantly melted.

And, it was the first time I didn’t get a big bottle of soda and bag of potato chips. Ahh… the memories!!

And then there was the year that Britt made me cry…She must have been about six or seven. Her gift was a huge poster with her little hand prints decorating all around the edges. But it was the poem that got to me.

It was about how I shouldn’t get upset with her when I see her little handprints on the walls. And here was the clincher… because some day she would be all grown up and those little hand prints wouldn’t be there anymore.

As I write this I can feel the tears coming again.

Mother’s Day Memories

StrollerFit is an exercise regimen that uses the stroller as something of a Nautilus machine. Moms use it to stretch, for isometrics and to walk, skip or run with. The three-times-a-week classes also give new moms the chance to get out and socialize, a rare opportunity for many mothers of newborns. Perhaps most important, baby gets to come along, relieving mom of the stress and expense of arranging child care.”

I especially like the part about socializing. That was one area of my life that suffered the most. It really would have been nice to have other young mothers to talk to. At the time, we had just moved into a village that had very few women my age. This would have been great!
