It’s called Refill America. Nalgene created seven unique, numbered water bottles for the project: Freedom, Life (pictured), Pursuit of Happiness, Justice, Independence, Pride and Liberty.

Nalgene chose seven original bottle carriers from the company’s Facebook page to start off the project. The bottles will be quickly passed along to other travelers, and every bottle carrier can submit a photo of the bottle in a special setting with a brief story about why the location is special to that person.

If you come across one of these bottles, you’ll find directions on how to submit a photo or story printed on the water bottle. Refill America will last until December 31, 2009. After that time, one lucky traveler who passed along a bottle and submitted a story and photo will receive a $5,000 travel voucher. Nalgene employees will chose the winner based on the photos and stories from the bottle that received the most submissions. That means if you get a bottle, you should pass it along quickly!

To track the progress of the bottles across America, visit www.refillamerica.org. As I write this, the bottles may be found anywhere from Boulder, CO to Chicago, IL.

Refill America Traveling Water Bottles

And, of course, I suck. True confession, right here: I find it nearly impossible to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Why? Because I hate water.

Actually, I love water. I love swimming in it. I love feeling it on my toes at the beach. I love watching a gentle rain douse my balcony. I just don’t care to drink it.

So, I am starting with a negative balance already. But then add to that recent news which puts the benign nature of my nalgene bottle into question and the fact that disposable water bottles, once so cool that you could buy designer carriers for them, are now the new social pariah…What the heck is a dehydrated yet eco-friendly girl to do?

I was so thrilled to find out about Primo water. From Primo:

Primo makes water bottles from plants, not crude oil, like those other water bottle companies — and they’re the only water bottle company in the U.S. that does this. If every weekend warrior, soccer mom and jetsetter traded in their other water bottles for Primo’s better bottled water, Americans would save 1 billion gallons of gas each year. Now that’s a sip in the right direction!

Ok, well that makes water a little more palatable. The only differences I can tell between Primo and other bottled waters is that the bottle itself feels a little more flexible than others, still sturdy. And unlike some other bottles, it doesn’t taste as, well, bottle-y. Plus I cannot wait to counter the next do-gooder ready to chastize me for my water bottle-induced carbon impact – hang on there buddy. My bottle’s made of corn!
