Feminist provocateur turned liberal activist Naomi Wolf has a new book coming out this month, called Vagina: A New Biography. Don’t hold the title against her — the underlying premise of the book actually sounds pretty cool, combining neuroscience and cultural history to explore women’s “pelvic neural networks” and the ways our brains, hormones and clitorises are linked. The December issue of Psychology Today arrived in our mailbox over the weekend, with a busty model donning boxing gloves and skimpy swimwear heralding an issue all about beauty. One of their features, “The Truth About Beauty,” gives us women some surprising advice: Ditch Naomi Wolf’s old “Beauty Myth” argument and put on some damn lipstick! Amy Alkon, a syndicated advice columnist (advicegoddess.com), says that women should forget about bra-burning and gender equality and get back to their vanity mirrors. Feminist imperatives to ditch our efforts at appearance are damaging and counterproductive, she says, concluding that “like knowledge, beauty is power.” More »
