This week let’s get outside with Nature Week! We have some great projects, crafts and recipes planned for the week that are eco-friendly, fun and incorporate learning, too.
Today’s project is a Worm Farm. Now before you say, eewwwww, this is not too bad – since you are going to contain the worms and the dirt. Worms play an important part in the ecosystem acting as Mother Nature’s recycling team while mixing and moving dirt.
There are plenty of instructions for building worm farms online – the two I like best are:

We have some great projects, crafts and recipes planned for the week that are eco-friendly, fun and incorporate learning, too.

Today’s project is a Worm Farm. Now before you say, eewwwww, this is not too bad – since you are going to contain the worms and the dirt. Worms play an important part in the ecosystem acting as Mother Nature’s recycling team while mixing and moving dirt.

There are plenty of instructions for building worm farms online – the two I like best are:

DIY Network’s Worm Farm instructions

Missouri Department of Natural Resources Worm Farm instructions

Pick one of the instruction sets and get the kids outside collecting dirt, worms and building their farms.

Another great activity is just to get outside and explore the world around you. Give the kids magnifying glasses, containers, tweezers and let them turn the backyard into their own science lab. Collect bugs, leaves, twigs, and dirt. Check them out under the magnifying glass and then write down the findings in their journal.

For more ideas, check out these books from the library:
