In this day and age in the United States, with so many people unemployed and with no health insurance, life can be scary. What if I get sick? What if my child has an accident? What if….?

Some companies and corporations are stepping up and lending a hand to those who need it, hoping that soon things will pick up again. One such company is Walgreen’s. At select Walgreen’s stores, there’s a service called the Take Care Clinic.

Through their Take Care Recovery Plan , Take Care Clinics will offer free health care services throughout the rest of 2009 to all current and future Take Care Clinic patients, and their families, who suffer a job loss on or after March 31, 2009 and have no health insurance benefits.

“Walgreens and Take Care Health Systems strongly believe that a family’s health care needs should not take a backseat to the economy,” said Sandra Ryan, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer for Take Care Health Systems. “Take Care Clinics were founded on the principle of providing patient-focused care and Take Care Health Providers have always served as advocates for patients that visit the clinics. Take Care Health Providers fully appreciate the important role they can play for patients, helping them to understand where the Take Care Recovery Plan starts and stops in terms of service delivery. To that end, Take Care Health Providers will work hand-in-hand with patients to provide them with information on all health care support options – including child and adult state assistance plans, free or discounted prescription plans and referrals to other affordable care sites within the health care system.”

The service treats patients who are 18 months or older. A description of what they treat is listed on their clinic web site . You may also use their site to find where a clinic may be near you.

Bonus for Blisstree.com readers:

Sandra Ryan, the nurse practitioner quoted above, has offered to answer your questions so if you leave them in the comment section, we’ll forward them to her and see which ones she can answer for you.

The women who are at the greatest risk of dying from cancer are “women of color and those who are financially disadvantaged.” Too often it seems that the people who need the tests the most are the ones who can’t afford to get them.
Now for some good news. The L.A. County Department of Public Health is “offering free breast and cervical cancer screening tests for low-income women with no health insurance.” This couldn’t come at a better time, with unemployment at all-time high.

Here’s a scary thought: With all the lay offs happening these days workers are finding it increasingly difficult to keep their health insurance. That’s ESPECIALLY frightening for diabetics.
A survey over at CNN says that in 2007, “researchers found that two-thirds of workers, if they were laid off, would be eligible for COBRA. Data from 2006 data suggest that only 9 percent would opt into the program.”
Since costs are higher now, that problem is probably even more prevalent.

It’s difficult. I know one of my fears has always been that I wouldn’t have health insurance. I’ve stayed at jobs I hated because of that, and when offered COBRA I did spend the money for it even though money was tight.

Diabetics need insurance. The costs are outrageous and without it they could forgo treatment or testing – which would only make them sicker.
