Adele is great for many reasons, but her admission that she’s a ‘no shampoo’ girl makes us like her even more. Asked by Glamour how she gets such impressive volume in her mane, she explained that her biggest secret is not using shampoo—a clean beauty trend that’s not just good for our bodies and the environment, but also a pretty great way to avoid the need for styling products, according to Adele. 50 days ago, I briefly joined the no-shampoo movement as an experiment. And while I received some dirty looks when I told my friends and family, it was a shockingly clean and grease-free period, which was predetermined to end in the New Year. And so, yesterday I revisited the soapy stuff and, I won’t lie, there were a few things I missed about lathering up–but I don’t think I’ll be making a habit of it. Shampoo and I haven’t broken up completely, but we’re definitely moving toward a “just friends” relationship. More

Last month, despite fears of becoming a repulsive grease-ball, I skeptically started on a no-shampoo experiment. Now, I’m more than half-way through (I’m free to use shampoo again when I wash the glitter out of my hair after New Year’s Eve), and planning how I’m going to re-incorporate some form of cleanser other than baking soda into my regimen–not because I haven’t loved the effects of going shampoo-free, but because I kind of miss the feeling of really, really scrubbed-clear hair. But I’m going to be a lot choosier about which one I use, mostly because I know which ingredients I don’t want to put on my hair. More

After wrapping up the third week of my no-shampoo experiment, I’m still seeing a lot of the same great hair perks that I saw in the initial two weeks: awesome body, strong strands, fewer fly-aways, and rapid growth that may or may not be because I ditched the stuff. But I’m also seeing a lot of something else: questions about the logistics of this experiment from readers who’d like to give it a shot themselves. More

Here’s how much my mother loves the idea of me going shampoo-free: she made sure she’d stocked up on baking soda and vinegar for me when I stayed in her house over the Thanksgiving weekend, which happened to fall in the middle of my eco-friendly beauty experiment. More

Last week, I wrote about my curiosity with the “no-shampoo” movement, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: folks who are eschewing shampoo, in favor of a more natural approach. People are skipping the sudsy stuff for a number of reasons, including concerns over the potentially-harmful chemicals often used to create lather and make it smell good. I gave it up just to see if the hype was worth it, and to see if it could work for someone who was active (read: sweaty). More

Breaking up is hard to do–though apparently, for some women, not when it comes to shampoo. The push to move toward no shampoo is picking up steam, but I’m a little skeptical about its effectiveness as a movement for those among us who move a lot. Can a clean break from shampoo work for active women? More
