I’ve been struggling a little with one of my characters for a novel. The novel was originally written several years ago. In those years I’ve gained more experience, so I’ve recently been looking it over for improvements. One thing I see now is how little character my main character actually has. Although I’d never have admitted it when I completed the novel, I suppose this is something that has always bothered me about this particular novel.

So, I’ve decided to begin a character diary for this main character. I’m hoping that by getting right inside this person’s skin I can see where I’m going wrong with her development. My plan is to use Noah Lukeman’s The Plot Thickens to really get the details down on my character.

I’ll let you know how it all goes later in the year.

I received an interesting email from the NaNoWriMo people yesterday. Chris Baty is encouraging ongoing challenges throughout 2007, including the usual novel writing month in November.
So, you may have written your goals or adventure challenges in your journal. Why not head over to the NaNoWriMo Forum Adventure Log and share your plans for this year. Apparrently they’re going to make you accountable with follow-ups, etc. So, only share your goals if you’re serious.
Personally, I find a little accountability can be just what it takes to make my goals actually happen.

Those joining the NaNoWriMo novel writing challenge began writing their 50,000 word novels today. Of course, it’s not too late to join them. Unfortunately, I won’t be one of the 70,000 strong group worldwide, but I hope you give it a go.
Grab that dusty idea you’ve worked on in your writer’s journal and start writing. You can always give up once you’ve hit 50,000 words if it is really no good.
I learn something every time I do the challenge. I’ve done the challenge three times. Not last year, though. I was super busy with my little boy. Looks like that’s going to keep me from doing it for another year, but I hope you will join in. I’ve really enjoyed writing each novel, too.

Let me know if you are going to do this writing challenge. I’ll check out your blog to see how you’re doing and cheer you on.
