NYC Marathon Runners Didn't Race, But They Did Give Back To Victims Of Hurricane Sandy

Many runners were devastated by the cancellation of the New York City Marathon last week, but they didn’t let it stop them from finding creative ways to fit in a long run–and a lot of effort towards Hurricane Sandy relief. From runners who registered at the last minute to run in other races for charity, to runners who organized volunteer squads when they would have been running the race, they gave runners a good name–even despite the outrage previously been aimed their way. Bloomberg New York Marathon Defense: It Will Raise $1 Million, Bring People Together; Won't Divert Resources

In a press conference this afternoon, Mayor Michael Bloomberg released updates on New York City’s recovery from Hurricane Sandy, encouraging everyone to volunteer and contribute cash donations…and defending his choice to proceed with the New York City Marathon this Sunday. NYC Marathon Uses Generators, Police Force While Hurricane Victims Suffer–This Is Inspiring, How?

Race organizers announced earlier this week that the 43rd annual New York City Marathon would still run as planned this Sunday, despite Hurricane Sandy’s damage to the city. Initially, some worried that the race could be a dangerous course for runners. USADA Gets Ridiculous And Bans Lance Armstrong From NYC Marathon

The USADA is on a serious witch hunt with Lance Armstrong, and now they are just getting ridiculous by banning him from ever running the New York City marathon again.

Armstrong ran the marathon in 2006 and 2007 and would likely return to the race again, but now he is being told that he cannot participate after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency officially banned him from this and many other races that are completely unrelated to cycling. More »

MS Inspiration: Zoe Koplowitz Finishes Last Place At The NYC Marathon

In a time of 31 hours and 20 minutes, Zoe Koplowitz completed the New York City Marathon yesterday (the day after she started) in last place–and she couldn’t be happier.

“It doesn’t matter how long it takes me to finish, it’s that I finish and I finish from the heart,” she said at the end.

For the 23rd time, Zoe crossed the Central Park finish line on crutches. The 63-year-old author and motivational speaker, who set a world record for the longest marathon finish time in the history of women’s running, has been living with multiple sclerosis since she was 25 and has completed every NYC Marathon since 1987–in last place. In fact, this is a woman who changed my life before I even knew who she was.

Running Support 101: How to Cheer Like a Champ In the NYC Marathon This Weekend

The ING New York City Marathon is this Sunday. It’s a little late for training advice, but those of you who only wish you were up to running 26.2 miles are still planning your marathon-watching parties, and we have a few tips. Cheering on your friends and neighbors can be exhilarating, but don’t get too carried away: You’re not actually running, remember?
