Floating Wind Generators

This power project is kinda odd because this technology is about generating wind power from 1,000 ft in the air.
Most of us know that wind generators rely on a steady flow of wind which is why before purchasing any wind generators, people consult wind maps.
Magenn Power of Ottawa Canada says,  at 1,000 feet there is a steady wind anywhere in the world.   This is the reason why they developed a way to harness wind energy from 1,000 feet in the air.    Think about it as a big goodyear blimp.
The helium-filled Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS) contains a turbine that …read more

Weird Gadget – Solar Powered Rodent Repeller

I’ve seen some weird gadgets before but this one is worth mentioning here at unplugged living because it is under our turf.

This one is a solar powered mole and rodent repeller.    Yup, they’re making solar powered ones as well.
The Solar Moler uses harmless sonic soundwaves to fool the rodent into believing that there is danger, causing them to flee the area of vibrations. The sound generated by the Solar Moler every 30 seconds will be sufficient to cover 7000 Square Feet.
That’s a pretty large area for such a gadget.
So what happens at night when the sun is gone you might …read more

Sony’s Sugar Power

Last August 23rd, Sony has informed the industry and the world about a prototype that they have been working on. This is a bio battery prototype and “bio battery” when defined actually means a device that can create energy through sugar (and all other carbohydrates).
What does it do? According to the company, the bio battery prototype can actually create electricity by using sugar. And this is just what the definition offers. To get the power, the device digests the enzymes.
Sony also did continue to say that their bio battery prototype is still currently in the stages of development. However, they …read more

Have You Heard About Green Weddings?

Oh yes. There are such things as green weddings (honestly, I just learned about this today).
In San Francisco, a couple – Kristy Wang and Nik Kaestner – had their green wedding. And Kristy describes it by stating, “Every time we make decisions, we’re trying to decide what would be the least wasteful. We didn’t want it to be about consumption.”
So what happened was that Kristy’s gown was something that she could wear again when she goes to formal occasions or parties. Guests came in car pools using hybrid cars. The wedding banquet was held outdoors in a Japanese garden. The …read more

Keep Air In For Power Later

This is some kind of cool little device that is going to give us power by keeping in some air for use later. You see, what is cool about this one is that it stores in wind so that even when there is nothing blowing about, you can still get the power you need.
This new system is created and developed by General Compression. And what they have created so far is this device that packs in air which is compressed inside its chambers. When needed, the air is let out so as to create wind.
After all, Michael Marcus, the president …read more

There’s Light In Tajikistan And It Is Homemade

In Tajikistan, people have been suffering from an energy crisis and they sure are having a hard time coping. Electricity is difficult to come by and now they have to work within three hours of electricity per day so plenty of businesses have closed down because of this. And during the winter, people have tried to make do with burning old logs to keep them warm.
But sure enough, people can be creative and resourceful. Some villages in the country have found ways so as to get their energy needs. Some people have already built their own mini-hydroelectric stations and people …read more

NSW Proposing Solar-Heated Water For Home Use

Peter Debnam is the opposition leader of NSW and he is proposing that families and home owners should be using solar powered showers and hot water heaters. Such a plan is backed up by Michael Richardson, the country’s Shadow Environment Minister.
Both Debnam and Richardson are also saying that so as to see this into reality, they are offering people $1000 worth in rebate so that they could install such systems in homes of those who are interested.
Debnam prevails, “We need to think globally and act locally when it comes to tackling climate change in NSW.” And with confidence, he adds, …read more

The Power Of The Earth

I thought I knew a lot about our planet but little did I know that there are lots of things one can get from the Earth.
One example is the situation in Unterhaching in Germany. You see, starting this May, the homes in that area would be receiving hot water which is taken from pipes buried 11,000 feet. This is part of the community’s shift towards using geothermal power in the hopes that they would be able to have projects to get into the country some $8.5 billion worth of investments in ten years.
Christian Schoenwiesner-Bozkurt is the manager of that community …read more

Google’s Solar Trees

You all heard about Google having its building installed with solar panels to help them cut down on electricity and power costs and in the process also help keep the environment clean. Now, Google has got something new. They call it the Google solar trees.
These Google solar trees are also part of that solar project that started with the solar panels for the company’s offices in California. Google says that their solar trees could actually be able to give them thirty per cent of the needed power for the whole complex.
And what else do trees do? Well, these solar trees …read more

Australia Has First Solar City

Soon enough, you would be hearing about the new and the very first solar city in the whole globe. This one can be found in the Land Down Under. So which town is it going to be?According to Prime Minister John Howard, the Australian suburb of Blacktown has been the lucky town chosen to be the very first solar city. The prime minister further says that such a move has actually been done so as to show that people can battle greenhouse gas emissions.
Sure, the whole project is going to take a huge chuck out of the federal government’s …read more
