As if fighting a battle with cancer isn’t enough, Patrick Swayze, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year, has to contend with what he calls shoddy and reckless reporting from certain tabloids.
The 56-year-old actor has provided inspiration to many who are fighting cancer and he is showing that some people can live with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, often considered to be one of the most fatal of cancers.
You can read more about Patrick’s battle with the tabloids in this People.com article: Patrick Swayze Responds to ‘Lies’ About His Condition.

The news was grim last January. Actor Patrick Swayze had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Nurses like me, who have worked with people with cancer, shook our heads, knowing that pancreatic cancer is one of the hardest cancers to beat. Sadly, because cancer of the pancreas is usually so far along when it’s diagnosed, the prognosis is usually very grim.
But, the months passed by and every so often, entertainment shows and websites would have a feature on how Patrick was doing and he seemed to be hanging in there. Good news, many of us thought. And then, he appeared [...]
Post from: Blisstree

The news was grim last January. Actor Patrick Swayze had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Nurses like me, who have worked with people with cancer, shook our heads, knowing that pancreatic cancer is one of the hardest cancers to beat. Sadly, because cancer of the pancreas is usually so far along when it’s diagnosed, the prognosis is usually very grim.

But, the months passed by and every so often, entertainment shows and websites would have a feature on how Patrick was doing and he seemed to be hanging in there. Good news, many of us thought. And then, he appeared on the TV special, Stand Up To Cancer – and there he was. A little older looking than he used to be, thinner than he used to be, but a healthy and whole Patrick Swayze. He was back.

Of course, he is being watched closely by his team of doctors and I’m sure his wife of 32 years, Lisa Niemi, played a large role in his recovery and continues to help him. Now, Patrick has a lead role on an A&E cop series that’s being filmed now. A self-confessed hard worker, he is finding the time to smile and appreciate life – and we get to appreciate him.

A research team from Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center and the VCU Institute of Molecular Medicine have showed that combining a dietary agent with a gene-delivered cytokine effectively eliminates human pancreatic cancer cells in mice displaying sensitivity to these highly aggressive and lethal cancer cells.
The cytokine used in this study was melanoma differentiation associated gene-7/interleukin-24, known as mda-7/IL-24.
The dietary agent, perillyl alcohol (POH), was combined with mda-7/IL-24, which is already used in other cancer treatments. POH is found in a variety of plants, including citrus plants, and has been well-tolerated by patients who have received it in clinical [...]
Post from: Blisstree

Well…the guy must be having a tough time, cancer-free or not. However, a person of his stature can make the state of his health really private if he wants to keep mum about it. With all the speculations I cannot help but think about this might all be a business strategy, in one way or another.

I agree. Going back to normal routine (whatever that means!) will benefit the cancer patient mentally. When his mindset is good, he won’t give up that easily and then maybe his body will respond well to treatment. But then that is not true to all cancer patients. Each case is always different.

Good news to all readers here wanting to hear the latest on Patrick Swayze since his cancer announcement.
On Friday night, he appeared in public: FOXNews has the photo and story.
Swayze took time off from his grueling chemotherapy regimen to take in Friday night’s NBA playoff game in Los Angeles between the Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs.
Although Swayze’s usually ripped physique seems somewhat shrunken by his fight, he appears to be holding his own against the usually aggressive cancer that often kills within weeks.
It’s just great seeing him holding it out, don’t you think? All the best.

Such were the findings of a team from University of Rochester Medical Center.
The new study also showed that when the pancreatic cancer cells were doubly assaulted — pre-treated with the antioxidant, resveratrol, and irradiated — the combination induced a type of cell death called apoptosis, an important goal of cancer therapy.

Although red wine consumption during chemotherapy or radiation treatment has not been well studied, it is not “contraindicated,” Okunieff said. In other words, if a patient already drinks red wine moderately, most physicians would not tell the patient to give it up during treatment. Perhaps a better choice, Okunieff said, would be to drink as much red or purple grape juice as desired.

Antioxidants or not, I just love red wine (and grapes too!). Give me a bottle of a nice red wine…i can finish it all by myself in one sitting.

While it is true that patients with pancreatic cancer has a very small chance of surviving this deadly cancer, doctors to Mr. Swayze stated that what the tabloids have reporeted isn’t exactly true.

“Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far,” Swayze’s physician, Dr. George Fisher said in the statement. “All of the reports stating the time frame of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic.”

But even though the five-week time frame trumpeted by tabloids may be false, cancer specialists say that pancreatic cancer more often than not comes with a daunting prognosis.

Well, we only wish that Patrick Swayze will respond well to his treatments.
