I wish I can dish out some tips on “Easter” dates but I’m afraid I don’t have any. Funny, I just remembered asking my mum a couple of days ago on whether people get married during the lenten season, more specifically on a Good Friday, Black Saturday or an Easter Sunday. All she told me was that it simply wasn’t done. Curious thought, wouldn’t you say? Perhaps someone can tell me more about this bit — answer my question, if you may.

John Drysdale, 46, divorced in 2001. He says finding someone his age who is educated, single and ready to settle down is a rare thing.

Grey is the new blonde

A new Galway-based dating company is offering singles an alternative to handing out their phone numbers to strangers.

Checkmeout, started by Galway based entrepreneur Frances Cahill, allows people to build a profile and hand out ‘calling cards’ to potential partners.

According to Frances, handing out the cards ias a far safer, more secure alternative than giving out your mobile number.

Speaking to the Galway Independent this week, she said, “The whole concept of handing out your phone number to people can be a bit daunting. So I thought there must be a simpler way.”

With checkmeout.ie, people log onto the website and fill out a questionnaire. They are then sent out cards with a website address along with a pin number. If they see someone out they like, they can simply hand them the card, which allows them to see their details on-line.

Frances adds, “If you’re out in a nightclub, a bar or in town and you see someone you like, you can hand them the card. They’ll then go onto the website, which naturally they will because of curiosity.”

The website allows people to chat on-line and exchange emails. Frances stresses that if someone is pestering you, you can simply change your pin number.

www.checkmeout.ie was launched on Thursday 17 August and there are already hundreds of members. The first batch of cards was sent out to members earlier in the week.  source

Some of the larger services such as Match.com, PerfectMatch or eharmony.com would be wise to catch on to this niche!

Even if they don’t offer that option, why not design and order your own free calling cards through VistaPrint’s printing offer with your online profile name and perhaps a location where your profile may appear – user name or whatever is going to be easiest for a person to contact you via online?

New online dating site with a fresh new concept

Author of “Finding Love After 50: How to Begin. Where to Go. What to Do,” “Middle Aged and Dating Again” and the forthcoming “Finding Love After 60,” due out next year – and dating columnist Tom Blake offers advice to seniors on getting out there and becoming active in the seniors single scene.

Many of the tips Blake provides could pertain to any generation, especially when the single has children.

Blake, who receives 100 e-mails a week on his column and national newsletter, says a lot of feedback is from older women who feel disenchanted about dating in their golden years.

“It’s very difficult for women, just by the numbers alone,” Blake says. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 33 single men age 65 and older for every 100 single women of the same age. Why? Because women have a higher life expectancy, Blake says.

Some of the tips Blake offers are:

• Always carry a name card, giving potential dates an easy way to contact you. List only your first name, either a cell phone or answering service number, or an e-mail address that doesn’t contain your last name.
• Seize every opportunity to meet someone.
• Be assertive, not aggressive.
• Be happy, positive and friendly. Smile.
• Get involved in activities you enjoy.
• Join a club.
• Don’t go out hoping or expecting to meet a mate. Go out to enrich your life.

The site was built with Joomla open source content management software. More features are planned as the site grows such as a community section and tips on sex life.

Gayla:  The only thing I find difficult about this is just how and when would a person know that the psycho isn’t the one posting the “bad date” information?

Anyone out there believe a site like this could make a real, honest to God go at encouraging the online single population to be more “honest?”

I’d never really thought about the need for such a niche dating site, but can certainly relate to the need.  Being the emotional worrying type that I am, I could easily see how a partner with such a dangerous and stressful job might not be the best choice for me.
