Unprotected Oral Sex Can Cause HPV, Cancer

Oral sex is believed to be “safe sex” by many teens and others who don’t use protection for the practice. However, it’s becoming alarmingly clear that unprotected oral sex can lead to transmission of human papilloma virus (HPV), which can cause head and neck cancer.

Doctors note that in the last 20 years there’s been a rapid increase in tumors of the throat, tonsils and base of the tongue. And people getting these cancers don’t have the typical risk factors. They may not be older patients who have smoked.

This morning I watched the “Oral Sex is the New Goodnight Kiss for Teens” on Good Morning America and my jaw hit the ground. While I had been hearing about teens getting caught having sex at school and in some cases out near where I live one teen had been raped in the girl’s bathroom, another (wasn’t raped) but gave “head” to another student for answers on a test.

Oral Sex and Throat Cancer

Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center researchers found conclusive evidence that human papillomavirus (HPV) causes some throat cancers in both men and women.
Study participants who reported having more than six oral sex partners in their lifetime were 8.6 times more likely to develop the HPV-linked cancer.
Oral HPV infection has been found to be the strongest risk factor for throat cancer, as reported by the researchers in the May 10 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
