We usually buy our cranberries in neatly portioned, sealed-off plastic bags (or in aluminum cans), so we don’t usually think about where they’ve come from before we dump them in a pot with sugar and orange peels. But their boggy … More

You know Thanksgiving is tomorrow, right? We assume you already know what you’re bringing to your parent’s/sibling’s/friend’s/in-law’s house for dinner. But if not, don’t freak out quite yet. There’s still time to save yourself and not ruin the holiday for everyone — without spending a fortune. We found ten things you can pick up tonight and bring to Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. And these aren’t your run-of-the-mill card store gifts; they’re indulgent and thoughtful, and are made from natural and organic ingredients. No need to thank us. We’re just here to save Thanksgiving, one cheap slacker at a time. More

Whether you’re feeding two or 20, there’s no question that Thanksgiving gets expensive (even if you’re serving half your dinner out of a can). And if you’re making all your recipes from scratch with all-natural, organic ingredients, then you’re in for a pretty high grocery tab. Once faced with grocery bills in the (high) triple digits, many of us start wondering if our guests will really appreciate the organic pumpkin pie spice or hormone-free milk and butter. You’ll know that your meal is below your usual standards of health and eco-responsibility, but will your guests really taste the $80 difference?

As much as we can try to imagine the inner workings of Michael Pollan’s all-natural mind, we’ll probably never figure out exactly what’s going on in there. But as long as he’s not planning a new book titled, Gotcha! The Story of a Man and His Funyons, we think we’d be pretty good judges of what he’d eat and what he wouldn’t. More

GOOD reports that the USDA just doled out $180,000 to a nonprofit that is trying to smear the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen list. Though we’re sure you need no reminder, the Dirty Dozen are the 12 fruits and vegetables that you should buy organic to avoid the worst pesticide residue.

Today, That’s Fit brought a disconcerting product to our attention: the Organic Batter Blaster. It’s ready-to-make, organic pancake batter stored in a cheez-whiz container for the mornings you’re too lazy to cook a real breakfast. You just squirt the mixture onto a skillet, and you’ve got yourself some pancakes. Did we mention it’s organic?

If Alice Waters makes it, it’s a pretty safe bet that Michael Pollan would eat it. Cafe Fanny Granola – the stuff Waters makes and serves in her legendary Berkeley restaurant Chez Panisse – is full of organic ingredients that really are wholesome, and not the corn syrup and processed grains that you’ll find in so many other granolas and “health” cereals. There are fewer than ten ingredients, and we can pronounce all of them (impressive, huh?): More

We don’t usually seek words of wisdom from reality television (call us snobs), but a recent quote from The Biggest Loser contestant O’Neal Hampton has us nodding in agreement:
People say that organic food and healthy food is so much more expensive. Not for me. The tradeoff was what I was spending in co-payments going to the doctor and then my medication for the 12 pills that I was taking a day I’m now spending in food, which is a lot cheaper than medicine.

Douglas McNish is back from summer vacation! Our friend Doug, head chef at Toronto’s Raw Aura organic and raw food restaurant, made his Blisstree debut sharing his original recipe for carrot and parsnip ‘fettuccine’. Then it was peppercorn-crusted tempeh steaks, massaged kale salad, quinoa pomegranate pilaf, quinoa and lentil burgers, a killer raw pizza crust recipe, plus a wicked marinara sauce and vegan cheese topping for your pie, cauliflower tabouli, and pumpkin seed refried beans for your dipping pleasure, an original summer Caesar salad, and avocado “fries” and ketchup. Last time it was his no-bake blueberry peach cobbler. Doug also teaches food workshops and gives cooking demos. He has tattoos. And he’s hot. Sadly, Blisstree can’t always get to Canada to visit Doug, so he’s kindly offered to come to us. Every other week, expect a surprisingly delish raw or vegan recipe from him. (Doug is into “cruelty-free” food – and we are into him.) Now dig into his 13th course for Blisstree. More

A.J. Jacobs, editor-at-large at Esquire and author of several books, including The Know-It-All and The Year of Living Biblically, gave the folks at Social Workout a few pointers on health-conscious living. One of his favorite ways to get through a treadmill workout? He listens to NPR’s Your Health. “…I listen to it on doublespeed. It’s great. More
