China’s One Child Policy Suspended
The earthquake that rattled China has killed more than 65,000 people and more than 23,000 are still missing. Officials have not been able to estimate how many children have gone missing or have been killed.
However, since the quake, the country has suspended the one child only policy for quake only victims.
China Adoption Requests Increase
According to the USA Today adoption agencies are receiving an increase in phone calls from people who are inquiring about orphaned children in China.
“There’s lots of interest,” says Joshua Zhong, co-founder of Chinese Children Adoption International, one of the largest China-only agencies in the USA.
Inquiries have more than triples since the May 12 earthquake, which left an estimated 4,000 children orphaned.
A Senior Adoption Official at China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs states that they intend to give first priority to domestic adoptions.

China Earthquake Creates Orphans
Organizations in Sichuan are currently preparing for the onslaught of hundreds of children, some that may be orphans and some that may have parents who are either missing or ill.
The Ministry of Civil Affairs stated that all adoption procedures would be activated only at the proper time.
