Jen also researched and mentions a book and instructional web site where you can learn more about this fascinating technique.

My daughter had an enjoyable day today painting and sun dyeing fabric for her quilting and fabric art. Beth started with fabric she’d previously dyed. Today she incorporated items from nature, ferns and leaves, for the designs on the fabrics below as she used sun dyeing and painting techniques. She said she eventually may do some stamping on the fabric. I think they are lovely in the photos as well as “in person.”

(Fabrics are originals by Beth Mastin at Meandering Threads.)

My daughter enjoys painting and dyeing fabrics and creating all types of unusual designs. She says it relaxes her. In fact, she used some of her dyed fabric for her padfolio project, described at her Meandering Threads blog.

When Beth has a few hours, between work and family, she does painting and dying to add to her fabric stash. Sometimes these fabrics will “call out” to her immediately and she starts designing with them. Other fabrics will remain in her stash until she needs those of particular colors.

She also likes to try out new painting techniques. Her local quilting group, Fiber Arts Friends, has asked her to teach a painting class at one of their meetings in January. I’m encouraging her to develop an online painting class.

Beth frequently tries new techniques and new media for her fiber art. I haven’t had an opportunity to ask how she plans to use the painted dryer sheets.

However, these colorful fabrics will make lovely designs, I’m sure. I’m intrigued by some of the techniques she tries. I haven’t tried dying fabric, but am very tempted to do some fabric painting myself.

Beth was taking photos of the fabrics tonight and soon will have them on her quilting blog, http://meanderingthreads.blogspot.com/ .

What do you do on your quilting days? What new techniques have you tried?
