I’m really excited about October for Kids Health Notes. One of the best ways that this blog can serve you is to help your families’ health by encouraging the use of eco-friendly products in our homes. Less chemicals in our cleaners mean less hazard for our children.

‘Sides, it’s Kids Health Notes’ First Anniversary last month, so I want to start the new year with cleaner, greener, and healthier families for our readers.

I’m giving away three products that have been parent-tested and parent-approved, so you know they really work.

Universal Stone all-purpose cream based cleaner. It’s certified green and made in Europe.

Seventh Generation cleaning products.

Ringley Teether. This a wooden and organic cloth teething ring that parents and infants love!

So, who’s up for it? Here’s how to join.

Answer this in the comment: What is one household chore you really love to do?

One entry per person per day.

It’s open to residents of the US only.

Contest ends 11:59 midnight EST on October 12, 2008 (Sunday). Three winners will be randomly chosen and announced via blog and email the week after.

If a winner does not reply within 3 days, he/she forfeits her winnings and an alternate entry will be chosen.

REMINDER #1 : In previous contests, I have had several winners forfeited for failure to reply to my emails. Please make sure your settings don’t put my email into the junk folder, otherwise you’ll have no idea you won. Better yet, please check this blog for the winners’ list after the contest ends. Best bet, come back often and stay a reader!

REMINDER #2: Only entries with legit answers will be included in the draw. There are good reasons I ask these questions in Kids Health Notes. Actually, only a few forget to answer the questions, but I really want to include all commenters into the contest, so just take note of that when you join. And as always, I appreciate the conversation. Have fun here!

UPDATE: This contest is now closed.

Who says it’s easy being a smart consumer? With so many new products in the market and colorful advertisements left and right, how does a parent make smart buying decisions?

Having a positive (or conversely, negative) review about a product is a bonus, especially when you read someone else’s experience and recommendations of the product. This is where good product reviews come in. If a product has been vigorously tested and approved by other parents and like-minded consumers, I’m more likely to buy it because I know others like me have already put their two-cents into it and they know it works.

Well, there is actually a “consumer report” that is run, tested and approved by parents: PTPA Media, which stands for Parent-Tested, Parent-Approved.

Started in 2007 by two moms, the co-founders Sharon Vinderine and Kathy May of PTPA are dedicated to “discovering, appraising and promoting new products that enhance family life”. Manufacturers worldwide send their products to PTPA Media to review, which in turn send these products to a database of more than 11,000 parents across North America to test and evaluate. Those that pass are given the PTPA Seal of Approval, which you might already see on some of these manufacturers’ websites and product packaging.

Check out the PTPA list of winning products. These are some of the top-of-the-line quality products that you might already be familiar with, like Seventh Generation, Maya wrap, Booda Bellie, Bumbo just to name a few.

Now I really like the kind of resource that PTPA brings, because I don’t want to spend my money on something that would be crappy (i.e., not live up to my expectation), and like every parent I know, I love to tell others when something shines!

So watch out for some products that I’m giving away this week that has the PTPA seal of approval. You’re gonna love them, and for sure you know they really work.
