We have been talking much about solar. Let us now try to shift from that and go with this story from Pennsylvania. See, in Vandergrift, that is where you would find the river Kiskiminetas. And from this river, officials of the area are looking at using this as a good source of electricity. How will they go about with that?

Off-the-Gridder Fighting ‘The Man’

In Cecil, Pennsylvania (southwest of Pittsburgh) an off-the-gridder is fighting an interesting battle with more than one of his local utilities. 76 year old William Williams has already done jail time for cutting the guy wires and digging up the anchors that Allegheny Power keeps trying to place on his property to secure a nearby utility pole. He’s been charged three times now and after each conviction, refuses to pay restitution and fines which results in his incarceration.
William lives completely off the grid. He collects rainwater via his roof gutters and filters it for his water. …read more
Pennsylvania’s Solar Scholars Program

University and college students at a handful of schools in the state of Pennsylvania will now be able to take part in an innovative new solar-energy education program that’s been put together by the Sustainable Energy Fund (SEF). The program – the first and only of its kind in the US – is dubbed Solar Scholars and intends to provide both undergrad and grad students with an opportunity for comprehensive hands-on training in the application of PV solar technologies, as part of a larger renewable energy curriculum.
