Gardening is often promoted as an inexpensive activity, but in truth it’s not always easy to garden on the cheap. That said there are some areas where you can cut gardening costs big time.

Save your old seeds (check to see if they still work).

Compost for homemade soil – even if your yard is small you can compost. In fact, you can compost indoors if you want.

Don’t buy new – garden tools, gardening books, pots, and so on. Most gardening supplies can be easily found at thrift stores. You can also borrow from or share garden tools with friends. It’s also super easy to check out books about gardening from the library.

Try some easy DIY landscaping instead of paying someone to do it for you.

Always use reusable items and recyclables such as egg cartons for starting seeds or reuse the plastic seed pots you used last year (clean well to avoid disease). You can also make your own growing pots with recycled materials.

Be water aware. Build a rain barrel, water at night, only give plants the actual water they need, and so on. Using less water can save you big time.

Make homemade weed killer -Mix one ounce orange oil and 1 teaspoon liquid soap with 1 gallon of 10% white vinegar. Shake it up and use it to spot treat weeds.

Use the least evasive pest control methods first, which are often much cheaper than advanced pest control supplies.

Buy seeds locally from the farmers market or a local farm store. You can often buy just what you need vs. a whole packet. at the local farm store.

Swap seeds and plants with neighbors.

Plant a garden that will naturally thrive where you live. Plants made for your climate will thrive better with less care than exotic plants.

Use what you’ve got such as leaves and newspaper as mulch.

Pumpkin on a stick grows fast but has thorns to watch out for. The leaves are huge compared to the tiny fruits and plants can be started from seed or cuttings. Normally early summer is a good time to start this plant, but if you’ve got a lot of sun you can still plant some now and you will likely get some pretty red orange fruits in time for fall. Just be sure to stalk and also protect from chills and frost.

This plant is not only totally cute for fall arrangements but it’s edible too (chop and toss into stir fry). If you do use it in decor you can use fresh stalks or allow fruit to dry on the stem (remove leaves) and use as a dry plant accessory.

WHAT IS JOURNEY NORTH?

A North American adventure for kids that allows them to log-in online (for free) and participate in a “Global study of wildlife migration and seasonal change.” Students K-12, chat and post about their personal nature field observations with other students across the country. Homeschoolers or unschoolers will like this project as well.

The site is kid-safe and encourages youth ro observe various natural changes in their local community as they occur throughout the year. For example, kids learn how to watch for and track things like the life and migration patterns of animals (monarch butterflies, robins, hummingbirds, whooping cranes, gray whales, and bald eagles to name a few), newly sprouting plants, weather changes and much more.

Journey North gives students a view into local natural worlds that they might not otherwise get to learn about. For example, a kid living in New York can get a taste of Oregon wildlife and vice vs.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

Kids can head over to Journey North and register for free. Young children will need an adult helper to get them set-up because while reading is not required to participate, there is some reading involved. Then there’s an easy orientation and after, kids can join up with one or more of the many projects happening at the site.

While Journey North is not a “green” by name program, it is a great way to get kids involved with the natural world – and kids who adore their world are far more likely to preserve it.

Visit Journey North
