I was curious as a friend recently mentioned one of her children catching another sibling in the bathroom at what age do we stop allowing them to go in with us or even when they are big enough to go in a plublic one on their own. I know it is sometime normally after kindergarten because that’s basically a taboo for Kindergarten.

IMG: Sxc.hu

Earlier this year we went to a stadium and there would’ve been no way my kids wouldn’t went besides the one I was in, my 12 year old knew and decided not to go until dad had to go. Later dad took all of them, they had a uni bathroom, I had no clue these existed but they are for both mom/dad and kids that way you could all be in one and know one of the parents would be out first.

So this got me to think, obviously we say go to the potty like a big kid. Course when we are out and about in the public world how do we handle the situation? Myself I go in with the girls, the oldest normally goes into the males but we are waiting nearby. If he takes too long I’ll yell his name. Do you let your kids run off to the bathrooms? Does the opposite parent take them? Would you use the uni bathroom? etc.

My first question would be to ask if something has happened between said child and the toilet? I remember my 3 year old reacting the same way just after she learned to use her new potty, only it tried eating her. That’s what she said when she came running out of the bathroom holding her butt in her hands. She swore it tried to eat her butt, but her butt got squished when she put the lid down on it.

Another thought would be did he/she choose the toilet, maybe they are ready for a new one. Some like their own potty chairs while others like just the seat to go on the potty.

Got any thoughts or suggestions for my dear reader?

Thanks to Ainsley, Zack is potty training. He pooped and peed in the potty.

Peer pressure rocks.

We logged on to post the Potty Dance on YouTube and do you know how many other people posted their child’s potty training success, techniques or humor? Hundreds. Maybe thousands?

Evidently, it’s the new right of passage.

I spent the next 10 minutes applying subtle peer pressure,

Look, Zack. That baby can go to the potty.
Oh, so can that one.

Look at him, he must be same age as you. I bet he doesn’t wear diapers anymore.

Peer pressure was also the technique that finally got Ainsley to tie her shoe. She’s almost 7 and this year I refused to buy shoes with ties that she wanted because she refuses to learn to tie them.

This little boy was standing there and I said, That boy can tie his shoes, How old are you? Only 5? Ainsley that 5 year old little boy can tie his shoes.

If I tie my shoes will you take me out for Chinese food?

Heck yeah.

And then she did. And I bought her the tennis shoes that tie instead of velcro and we went out for Chinese.

Brain washing, outside polygamist cults, is an underrated and legitimate method with some great applications.
Potty training would be one of them.
Call me crazy – I’m sure half of you will, but that would be no different than any other day – I’m trying to potty train my 2-year-old son.
For his second birthday we gave him the Potty Training (Baby Signs) and some big boy underwear. The kit has a “choo choo train” theme. Get it? “potty train.” I was more excited than he was.

I realize common parenting advice says not to push it and to “wait till they’re ready,” but I reject such advice.

The Potty Training (Baby Signs) authors and child psychologists note that the studies that support “wait till they are ready” advice comes primarily from diaper companies like Pampers and Huggies.

The kit comes with a video and a book about going to the potty, teaching the sign language for the words: potty, more, wash. I was a little disappointed there were no fun signs like poo poo, pee pee and wipe. Isn’t wipe important? Why no sign for wipe?

I’m making him watching the video and read the book over and over and over. Also adding other videos like Elmo Goes To The Potty.

One of my major motivators is that diapers are expensive.

Another is that he’s indignant about me getting in his personal business.

Zacky, even Elmo Goes To The Potty.

You don’t want me to change your diapers?

No.

I wouldn’t want anyone changing my diapers either. If you go to the potty I won’t have to change you anymore.

No.

Does your bum hurt from that rash?

Yeah.

If you went on the potty you wouldn’t get rashes anymore.

Potty?

Yeah. You want to go potty?

No.

Do you want a sticker and candy?

Yeah!

OK. If you sit on the potty you can have a sticker and candy!

No.

Want to blow the potty train whistle?

Yeah.

Okay, sit on the potty. All Aboard the Potty Train! All Aboard! Tooot Tooot!

Potty!

Yeah, go on it.

No.

Okay.
No pressure. That’s the thing. I’m giving it a year. The year between 2 and 3 we’re potty training. If it happens quickly all the better. If it takes all year, OK.

But, I stop buying diapers on the 3rd birthday Zack.

We don’t have children, but we do have a dog. And I can recall that as I studied puppy house breaking methods, some of the language used gave me the impression that there might be similarities in potty training a human child.

Likewise, I noticed that some of the puppy language reminds me of how my business first began to develop, another form of child rearing.

I will use some text, borrowed from typical a puppy training resource, and you judge for yourself where you are able to see correlations: potty-training or new business.

It’s normal for a young puppy to be a little “input/output” machine. Since puppies are growing and developing rapidly at this stage, they seem to need to eliminate constantly!

Confine your puppy to a small, ‘puppy-proofed’ room and paper the entire floor. Put his bed, toys and food bowls there. (new home office).

At first there will be no rhyme or reason to where your pup eliminates. (I’m equating this to how I developed my business plan).

There will always be minor set-backs. If you stick with it! (Child and new product development).

Your objective is to take your puppy to his toilet area every time he needs to eliminate. This should be about once every 45 minutes.

Just after play, eating, drinking or walking.

When he does eliminate in his toilet area, Praise and reward him profusely and enthusiastically!

The more times he is rewarded, the quicker he will learn (you entrepreneurs out there know from that one, right?)

Consistency and Patience are the keys. Never scold or punish.

Don’t forget, most puppies are not reliably house trained until they are at least 6 months old.

I don’t know what that is in child or new business years.
