After that they speed up and other than the prezzies, no one wants to admit to another year, but this book will show you how to make the most of those specials days for your kids.

“Lifestyle expert David Tutera offers practical tips from his television show for throwing extraordinary yet easy and affordable birthday parties for all ages. David Tutera is a highly regarded event designer whose clients have included Jennifer Lopez, Elton John, Barbara Walters, and the Rolling Stones. He is also the host of the Discovery Channels hit one-hour show, the Party Planner with David Tutera, in which Tutera lends his expertise on how to throw unforgettable birthday parties on everyday budgets. Each chapter of BIG BIRTHDAYS covers a party by focusing on the look, the scent, the touch, the taste, and the sound of the celebration. There is a party for every milestone from age 1 through 100, including a father/son fishing party for a 5-year-old, a turning-over-a-new-leaf party for a 40th birthday, and a safari send-off for a 65th birthday. The parties are set in a variety of indoor and outdoor locations, such as a nightclub and an apple orchard. Featured are food menus, cocktail recipes, how-tos for simple projects, and 100 Tutera Tips for dcor, invitations, entertainment, place cards, table settings, floral arrangements, and party favors. Tutera brings a fresh, original twist to birthday parties while honoring individual tastes and personal touches.”

After reading all of that, maybe I won’t put up a fuss when the kids want to go all out for my next birthday!

“To answer this question, I went to the parents of the most confident kids I know. I asked if they had a secret formula. All the parents agreed that while parents (or aunts) can’t give their children self-confidence, they can create opportunities that can. ”
Go and take a look at the list. It makes a lot of sense!!

I began thumbing through it and thought that of all my blogs, maybe this would be the perfect one. Anyone who knows me, knows that a love of simple things just isn’t me. I always seem to want more, but after reading a few pages, I had to stop and think about what I had read. Like this for example…

Where will the kind, thoughtful, caring people come from for the next generation if our children are not tought the value of putting someone else’s needs above their own… Edith Schaeffer.

Instead of putting the book back on the shelf after this post, I think that I will keep it out for a few days and see what else it has to offer! Maybe the simple things is something I should be giving a little more thought to! And you might want to pass along a little of the same wisdom to your kids.

Then nine-year-old Georgia giggles from where she sprawls under the window on the couch. She has reached a funny part of her novel. Kevin, 14, recites aloud an interesting fact from the website he is perusing at the small computer desk tucked into the corner of the room. Sophie, 12, longingly mentions an ad describing a horse for sale in her magazine and nudges her mother to look.”

Sadly enough, my son hated reading all the way through school. But the minute he graduated and could read for the sheer pleasure of it, he suddenly became an avid reader. If he doesn’t get a gift certificate from a bookstore for Christmas, my non reader as a kid, is disappointed!

It seems to me that schools have to address this issue. Perhaps, kids should be given some time to simply read for pleasure and then hopefully, picking up a school book won’t be something to be avoided at all costs.
Times have changed since my kids were on the receiving ends of allowances, so I’m turning it over to you for discussion. When should you start handing out money and what do you expect in return? Is it a child’s right or should there be “strings” attached?
