If you’re pregnant, you should already know how important it is to include fatty fish in your diet. Here’s another report reinforcing that: Omega-3 Intake During Last Months Of Pregnancy Boosts An Infant’s Cognitive And Motor Development.
Apparently, babies’ visual acuity as well as their cognitive and motor development were closely linked to DHA concentration in the umbilical cord blood at the time of their birth. This emphasizes how important a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids is, particularly during the last trimester when the fetus undergoes crucial retinal and brain development.

“A diet rich in omega-3s during pregnancy can’t be expected to solve everything, but our results show that such a diet has positive effects on a child’s sensory, cognitive, and motor development. Benefits from eating fish with low contaminant levels and high omega-3 contents, such as trout, salmon, and sardines, far outweigh potential risks even during pregnancy,” conclude the researchers.

Don’t know which fish is safe to eat? Read my previous entry on this. Don’t like fish? Fish oil supplements are just as good.

Spring time, asparagus time!
Asparagus are perfect for pregnant women or those planning to conceive as they are rich in folic acid, a nutrient documented to help prevent a developmental birth defect called spina bifida in newborns. Low folate consumption has also been associated with increased homocysteine levels, a risk factor linked with coronary heart disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease.
How do you like your asparagus served? With hollandaise? Stir-fried? Check out these asparagus recipes from the California Asparagus Commission for more ideas!

More and more scientific data are showing the relationship between maternal nutrition and fetal conditioning, i.e., how a pregnant woman’s diet affect the health of her child later in life.
A new study of 1924 children, published in the early online edition of Thorax, indicate that mothers who eat apples and fish during pregnancy may protect their children from developing asthma and allergies later in life.
According to the research, “The present study suggests beneficial associations between maternal apple intake during pregnancy and wheeze and asthma at age five years.” They add that their findings “suggest an apple specific effect, [...]
Post from: Blisstree

A new study of 1924 children, published in the early online edition of Thorax, indicate that mothers who eat apples and fish during pregnancy may protect their children from developing asthma and allergies later in life.

According to the research, “The present study suggests beneficial associations between maternal apple intake during pregnancy and wheeze and asthma at age five years.” They add that their findings “suggest an apple specific effect, possibly because of its phytochemical content, such as flavonoids.” The research paper cites other related studies on apples, including those which found that “intake of apples as a significant source of flavonoids and other polyphenols has been beneficially associated with asthma, bronchial hypersensitivity, and lung function in adults.”

So, for the moms-to-be out there, snack on apples and do incorporate fish in your diet. While it’s true that there are fish types you should better stay away from, if you choose the right ones, the benefits outweigh the risks.
