Feel pretty haughty about your “all-natural” face wash, don’t you? Same here. You’d like to think it’s free from harsh, possibly toxic chemicals including sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which you’ll find in industrial cleaning products, engine degreasers, and car wash soaps; and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), a cheap foaming agent and detergent. We would, too. But some products with SLES have been found to contain trace amounts of the carcinogen 1,4-dioxane. And though SLS hasn’t been designated a carcinogen, it can cause skin irritation. So have you ever actually read the back of your trusted scrub tube to verify the ingredient additives you’re applying to your mug?
