It is unsure whether the Bowen books will be released under the HarperCollins Children’s Books or HarperTeen label.
It’s a sad day when we see something like Bowen Press close. It was, as they stated, Provacative, Bold, New, Graphic…and in my words…needed.

News consuming the children’s book publishing world revolves around the words “lead free.” A new law, The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, enacted in August 2008 and going into effect February 10, 2009, deals with the need for toys to meet specific lead free standards. This is a result of the toys found containing lead that originated in China.

Now strict standards are being applied to those manufactured in the United States, as well as those coming from foreign countries. This affects the large manufacturers as well as small businesses, home businesses, and craftspeople.

Books aimed for children 12 and under apparently are grouped among these “toys,” and book publishers are scrambling to adhere to the new child safety law. This will apply to self-publishers, too. Confusion reigns regarding whether and how much resellers, thrift shops, and e-book sellers of used books and the like are affected.

Then the question arises, “Will libraries and schools have to have their books tested or get rid of them?” Interpretation of the new law isn’t entirely clear.

Is this a new way to censor and ban books? How will you be affected by it?

For more details, read Book Printing Hits Child Safety Scramble.

Autobiographical Fraud

The third in a recent flurry of autobiographies has been proven a contrived story, one that was praised on Oprah’s show, as well as by others. Berkley Books cancelled a Holocast love story, Angel in the Fence, due to come out in February, after they found out the story was not true as initially claimed.

This book follows two published books, A Million Little Pieces and Love and Consequences, which the authors eventually admitted were fabricated. A children’s book, Angel Girl, based on the supposed Holocaust love story, appeared in print earlier this year.

With these widely publicized books coming to light as contrived stories, it becomes difficult to know what’s true and what isn’t when you’re reading about someone’s life. Some, perhaps all of the books, may have made good fiction novels if labeled as such. It’s when the author tries to pass them off as true stories of his/her life that the trouble begins.

One’s memory of their life often become hazy without notes and journals. Also, members of a family will remember incidents somewhat differently, yet they know that those things happened. My sister and I frequently discuss childhood incidents, and one recalls more details than the other. However, we know that they occurred.

What do you think? Have you begun to doubt the truth as written in autobiographies you read, whether they’re for children or adults?

Or do they find the true story in books making the rounds this Christmas?”

Because Christmas books are popular and Christmas one of the highly celebrated holidays, it makes sense, if someone wants to promote a book, to do it under the guise of it being a fun little Christmas story.

A recent story at Fox News, Children’s Books Use Christmas to Push Global Warming Agenda, highlights the pros and cons of this strategy, the fact that there are proponents and opponents of these books and the stories they tell.

Where do you stand on this issue?

Is Christmas the time to air these agendas?

Did you buy these books for your children for Christmas?

As we travel “around the world” this week, in keeping with the theme at One Book Two Book, we may want to look at “traveling green.” You may be traveling vicarously, planning future travel, or actually traveling.

Liz Lewis, my co-blogger at Alzheimer’s Notes, now writes this very interesting and informative new blog. About 18 months ago, Liz decided to pursue her dream of becoming a full time writer. She started a blog, My Year of Getting Published, detailing her experiences. After a year, she joined me as co-blogger at Alzheimer’s Notes and has been very enjoyable to work with.

Since then, she also became a co-blogger at Health Bolt, in b5media’s Health and Wellness channel. Now she’s writing Traveling the Green Way, which expands upon her love of travel and travel writing.
