The past two weeks, we’ve had more rainy days than sunny ones in New Hampshire. Sometimes it’s been drizzly all day. Other days we’ve had sunny mornings and thunder storms throughout the afternoon. Generally, too, the temperatures have been lower, too chilly for comfortable beach days.
What do you do when your beach days, whether in a backyard pool, a community pool, the nearby river, a lake, or the ocean, turn into weather that curtails outdoor activities?
Here are some suggestions. You can find books with ideas for more or give directions for some of these.

What can youngsters do on a rainy day related to books?Reading and listening to audio books, even watching movies based on books, can lose their appeal to youngsters as a rainy day continues. So are there activities that spring from the books they love and read?
*Karen suggested Making Handmade Books in a recent post. These can be the child’s version of a favorite story or a completely new one.
*Create games involving their books and favorite characters.

*Create games involving their books and favorite characters.

*Act out the stories.

This was something my sister, brothers and I enjoyed as children in the era before television and video games. (Youngsters I talk with today can’t imagine such a life!)

I recall, after Mother read us Heidi as a bedtime story, we reinacted various scenes from the story. We made Grandfather’s mountain home by arranging chairs and covering them with blankets. Mother let us make a lunch of cheese, crackers and milk that we took up the mountain.

As we trudged up the stairs of our farmhouse with homemade packs on our backs, we pretended we were going to the mountain to tend the goats. We didn’t have a wheelchair for Clara, bo she reclined on a blanket.

*Write a script for a play.

Sometimes my sister and I wrote scripts for the books we read, and we children acted them out. This also led to creating our own stories and plays from our imaginations.

Kick off Summer with a SPLASH!

Now if it’s not raining and the weather is warmer (than it is here in NH today) you can kick off summer with a SPLASH PARTY over at Weary Parent. You’ll find numerous ideas to use today and throughout the summer.
