I remember reading King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry and being fascinated by the stable boy who worried about the well being of his favorite mare, who was about to foal, during Ramadan. The boy was afraid she would suffer because the Sultan ruled that she and all the other horses were required to fast along with the people.

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins on September 1. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Ramadan is a time to focus on the Koran and on the blessings of God. It is traditional for muslims to fast between sunrise and sunset during this period and to reflect on their religion and their spirituality.
