When is rape not rape? When Rick Ross doesn’t call it that (duh). More
espite taking a week, the trial was exhaustive and the emotions of many were riding on this verdict. Considering we are not, by any means, an unbiased website that never voices its opinions, I can honestly, openly say I am extremely glad these two young men were declared guilty. More
Birth rape. It’s the relatively new term used by some to describe awful labor and delivery care where a woman’s personal choices are disregarded. It often involves doctors or midwives shoving fingers or other medical instruments into a woman’s vagina during childbirth without any warning, and sometimes even continuing after the woman screams out in pain or loudly objects. The term has continued to morph and has lately been used to describe cases like Lisa Epsteen’s, whose doctor threatened to call the police and force her to have an emergency c-section because he was worried about the health of her child. The problem is that this new bit of progressive vocabulary hurts both birthing rights activists and sexual assault survivors. More
“Keep Calm and Hit Her.” “Keep Calm and Rape A Lot.” Sayings that look great underneath a crown on a snazzy t-shirt, right? Oh wait. Unless you’re a total asshole, these are probably not messages you’d want emblazoned on your chest—not to mention on your website. That’s why Amazon, one of the biggest online retailers in the world, is under fire: consumers in the UK noticed these wildly-offensive and incredibly sexist t-shirts on the site. More
Today, in “things that should not have to be news but are because the world is crazy”: the Roman Catholic Church of Germany has declared that it approves of emergency contraception in the case of rape. The discussion and declaration … More
What started as a concealed carry debate has turned into #LiberalTips2AvoidRape, a hashtag cataloging all sorts of disturbing and disgusting ideas about rape and rapists. More
When we see domestic violence and rape statistics, we are almost always shown them in groups divided by gender, income, age or race. These are all important factors to look at, as they can be extremely telling about which people are being targeted more than others. However, it’s rare that people talk about sexual orientation when it comes to rape, possibly because sexual assault has so little to do with orientation (since it’s a crime of power, not sex). In the first nationwide one its kind, a study by the CDC has been released examining the links between sexuality and sexual violence. More
Via NPR, another way in which Washington legislators refusing to play nice with one another is undermining the health and safety of the American people. It seems political gridlock is partly to blame for Congress failuring to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act for the first time since 1994. More

Polls show Rep. Todd Akin behind Claire McCaskill in the race for Missourri Senate, and election day is coming fast. So to sway voters, he’s pulling out the big guns: a Russian immigrant, and a rape victim who had an abortion. These are the women featured in his latest ad, which has the two women explaining their backgrounds and gushing over their warm feelings for the Senator. Is it enough to balance out his “legitimate rape” comments? I don’t think so. More
Tina Fey spoke at the Center for Reproductive Rights Inaugural Gala in New York last night, and while the actress/comedia/writer/producer/mother has been quieter throughout this campaign season than the last, she still managed to get in the best jab at Todd Akin we’ve heard, since the Republican Senate candidate dropped the “legitimate rape” bomb in August this year. Last night President Obama appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, and not surprisingly, he was asked about the won’t-possibly-become-senator-now, Richard Mourdock and his most ignorant comment ever about women and rape. In return, let’s just say that Obama gave … More
With only 13 days left on the campaign trail, this is not the time for Republicans to be making idiotic statements, especially about sensitive issues like rape. But, nevertheless, the Republican candidate for Indiana Senate, Richard Mourdock, did just that when he said that pregnancy from rape is something that God intended. Even with Mitt Romney‘s conservative stance on women’s issues, he’s trying hard to let us know that he doesn’t agree with this (even though he supports Mourdock’s election). More
So this is what college boys are doing these days: thinking up new and creative ways to get away with rape. At least at Miami University where a flier posted in the men’s bathroom at a freshman co-ed dorm educated other guys on the “Top Ten Ways to Get Away with Rape.” Some say it’s a joke, but there’s nothing funny about this shit–especially once you read some of their “tips.” More
