Valentine’s Day Dog Biscuits

Humans aren’t the only ones who can have some special treats this Valentine’s Day — why not make a batch of your dog’s favorite homemade biscuits and dress them a bit, too?

These treats are easy as can be to make, and can easily be cut into cute little heart shapes after the dough has been rolled out. I like to leave the baking pan of biscuits in the oven for several hours after I’ve turned it off, and then keep the biscuits out on the counter for a few more hours after that to make sure they’re completely dried out …read more

Bacon Dog Biscuits

My dogs, like most dogs, love bacon. They don’t get it often (neither do we!) and being such small dogs in the first place they only get a tiny bit when we do decide to give them a taste. So when I came across a recipe for these bacon dog biscuits I knew they’d be a hit.

Flavored with real bacon fat instead of a processed “flavoring,” these treats seem to be pretty satisfying to my pups (who still only get them occasionally!). Though it seems like quite a bit of fat to use, keep in mind that your dogs won’t …read more

Peanut Butter Puppy Poppers

I love making my own homemade treats for my dogs because I like knowing exactly what’s going into them. I also like trying out new recipes now and then to mix things up for them a bit, and though I know they probably don’t care one way or the other, it makes me feel a little better that they’re getting a bit of variety, even if it is just treats!

1 tbsp. baking powder
1 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth)

Treats for Rats: Dried Fruit Balls

It’s been a few years since we’ve had rats as pets, and though I’d love to have more it’s just not in the cards right now. They do make fantastic pets and are especially great if you live in an apartment or condo where taking a dog out for walks isn’t practical.

Just like with my dogs, I liked making homemade treats for my rats. They’re easy to please and though they will eat just about anything that doesn’t mean you should give them just about anything!
Just like with any other pet, rats have nutritional needs that are easy to …read more

Gourmet Kitty Dining

Though we feed our cats one flavor of dried, store bought cat food, I’ve often wondered how they would react if I tried making something for them. Given how they’ve treated homemade treats, I think it’s a safe bet that any type of deviation from their normal meals would be met with just as many upturned noses!

However, knowing how much they love tuna fish, I do have to wonder if they would give this “gourmet” kitty dish a try. I suppse if we ever had leftover sole then I’ll see, but until then, they’re stuck with the bagged stuff!

Dog Eggnog

Dog treats don’t have to be baked for your four-legged family members to enjoy them — have you ever considered a drinkable treat that would be appropriate for the holiday season too?

A dog eggnog, served in moderation, of course, is a yummy seasonal treat that your dog can enjoy as you sip your own. Pair it up with a homemade dog biscuit for an even more special treat after an afternoon of romping in the snow.

Veggie Dog Bagels

I like making my own treats for my dogs because I know exactly what’s gone into them and how fresh they are, and I also like that I can make a smaller batch of something and know that they’ll be used before they go bad or stale.

These doggy bagel treats are vegetarian, though you could easily substitute some beef or chicken broth for the water, and even add some shredded cheese for a little bit of extra flavor.

1/2 cup of Wheat Flour
2½ cups of White Flour

Leftover Turkey Treats for Your Dog

It’s the day after Thanksgiving and if you’re like us you’ve got a ton of cooked, leftover turkey in your fridge. If you’re also like us, over the next day or so you’ll be madly thinking up ways to use it up quickly without having to portion any up to put in the freezer.

Instead of serving your family turkey for the fourth or fifth night in a row, you can incorporate some of the white meat into treats for your dog. It’s easy, healthy and will use up some of the excess! Make sure you use just the white meat …read more

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats

Though it’s not a good idea to feed your dog the same things you’ll be eating with your Thanksgiving feast, there are a few things you can give them to share a little bit of the holidays.

These easy-to-make dog biscuits are made with canned pumpkin (make sure you’re not using the canned pumpkin pie mix!) and peanut butter for a tasty and healthy snack. They also smell pretty good while they’re baking!
