Green Home of the Week

I’ve been slack about showing a green home that’s for sale each week - but I don’ always see one I like. This week however, I saw a great one.

The house, located in De Soto, Wisconsin, is an off-grid home, timber-framed and strawbale construction. There’s a greenhouse, natural springs, and 6.25 acres to boot. I like that it looks all curvy from the front:

Then from the side it looks super slick.

You have to see the interior - nice and simple and very basic; just my style. This green home and others are for sale at Green Homes for Sale.

The Ultimate in Recycled Homes

Superuse.org is this great site that consists of (as you might think) recycled items made new again.

From Superuse.org:

“Superuse.org is an online community of designers, architects and everybody else who is interested in inventive ways of recycling. The site allows you to post items at various scales within the reuse-topic. All examples of small commodities, furniture, interiors, buildings and reuse on urban scale are welcomed. Next to exhibiting applications, we promote the development of knowledge on the subject by starting up discussions, adding historical background and allowing user comments.”

Here’s one amazing find - the recycled house - made from an airplane! Too spiffy for words.

There’s an awesome story about this home, with room layout descriptions, reasoning, and more. You should read it.

Shiny Happy Architecture Around the Web

I’ll admit it, not all of this architecture is technically shiny, but all of it makes me delightfully happy, thus I can name it how I see it.

Contemporist has the most amazing, octagon dreamy, above the trees, weird home you’ve seen in a while - check it out.

Treehugger unveils the hyper neat newspaper house:

Ah yes, it took about 150,000 papers, but the house got built. To see this recycled darling in progress visit Treehugger.

Sensory Impact has the most beautiful array of lighting systems, blown to look like bubbles. I can’t believe I missed these before, they’re really very unique and amazing. They’re calling to me.

I was reading Tropolism, where I saw a link to A Daily Dose of Architecture, who has the actual image shots of Aqua - the new wavy insane Chicago structure. If you saw the renderings being passed around the web, you might think this building would come off a little funny in reality, but it’s actually looking like you’d expect in your happiest dreams. Below is a rendering, but Daily Dose has the full scoop go see!

And because Daily Dose wasn’t on my list of visits today, and I only saw Aqua thanks to Tropolism, you should go show them some love. Back in Feb they had the cool Dubai Autodrome, a building that looks sort of likely to walk off when you’re not looking.

And that’s what I’m reading today. What cool structures do you like lately?

Offbeat Emergency Post: Recycled Home

From time to time we do have an offbeat emergency. Usually it involves me not being able to sleep until I post something amazing. Today’s emergency comes smack in the middle of the day which is new. I’m in the middle of building a monster city with my son but I took a break to check my email and now to post this.

Head over to Deb’s blog Simply Thrifty to see a house built out of 100% recycled materials — there’s a video and much coolness abounds. It was built back in 2005 but I missed it so perhaps you did as well. If so check it out; you’ll be glad you did.

Emergency averted and you can now resume your day. As will I — back to building monster city.
