Pretty & stylish reusable grocery bags

I’m usually not a fan of polyethylene reusable bags; even though they are reusable, it’s questionable how recyclable they are at the end of their life and also there are other, more sustainable bag options. For example, you can get bags made of organic cotton, recycled cotton or hemp. However, that said, cloth bags are more expensive in almost all cases. Bags made of polyethylene are more eco-friendly than disposables for sure and because of their mateiral they’re more water proof than cloth, last a long time, and cost less, making them a smart reusable bag otpion for folks on …read more

Choose greener product packaging

Many products come packaged. It can be a huge waste on resources and contributes to our growing landfills. However, it’s easy to make smarter product and packaging choices. Following are some tips…

Buy products that come sans packaging. For example does a Frisbee need a package? Do you need to buy tomatoes that come in a box wrapped in plastic, when a bin of non-wrapped tomatoes sit nearby? No not really. Buy the package free variety of items whenever possible.
Buy stuff in reusable packaging. For example a soy candle in a reusable glass jar or soap in a tin. Just make …read more

Introducing Joey Totes

Nowadays people use reusable bags when going grocery shopping or visiting the Farmer’s Market. From our last trip to the Farmer’s Market I had with me Joey Totes bags. What makes Joey Totes different from other reusable bags is that they fold nicely into small pouches making it easier to put in your purse or coat pockets whenever you need them.
Joey Totes are not the usual carry-around reusable bags that you see everywhere. It is made of rip-stop nylon which is commonly used on outdoor clothing making it durable and easy to fold for easy stowage inside your …read more

How many disposables can you live without?

Disposable resources are not eco-friendly. Every item you use once or twice then toss is basically resources down the drain in terms of materials used and energy wasted both in manufacturing and transport. Luckily, there are currently tons of reusable options available that take the place of conventional disposables. Below are some traditional disposables and some alternatives you could be using instead. Even if you just choose a few disposables to give up, it’ll still make a positive eco-impact.

Plastic supermarket bags ban

The People’s Weekly World reports that this week, the head of the United Nations Environment Program called for worldwide ban on plastic supermarket bags. Achim Steiner, UN under-secretary-general and UNEP executive director, notes that, “Thin-film single-use plastic bags, which choke marine life, should be banned or phased out rapidly everywhere… there is simply zero justification for manufacturing them anymore, anywhere.”

I agree personally, because plastic bags are a complete eco-nuisance, but I am wondering how a law like this might affect everyone without reusable bags. Paper bags will still be around for …read more

Why use reusable grocery bags

Reusable grocery bags are one of those must-have green items. Billions of plastic grocery bags end up in the landfill each and every year and paper bags aren’t much better for the environment. If your goal is green living, you really only have one solution – not paper or plastic; use a reusable bag each and every time you shop.
