Omega 9 Oils
I received an email from a reader about Dow AgroSciences’ canola and sunflower Omega-9 Oils. I know there’s a lot of controversy enveloping canola oils, but the FDA has authorized canola oil bottlers to indicate health claims on their labels pertaining to canola oil’s role in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. And according to Dow Agro’s website: Omega-9 Oils are healthier because they have zero trans fat and have the lowest amount of saturated fats among oils”, and is thus an ideal choice particularly for restaurants.

Rice Bran Oil Against Heart Disease and Cancer
A few days ago, we bought our first bottle of Rice Bran Oil. I’ve read a number of preliminary studies on the (potential) health benefits rice bran oil, all due to antioxidant properties conferred by its high tocotrienol (vitamin E) content. Among the potential health benefits are mostly in promoting cardiovascular health (reduce plasma cholesterol, reduce cholesterol absorption and decrease early atherosclerosis, inhibit platelet aggregation) but a recent study also shows that tocotrienols may also hold promise in combating cancer.
