Destroyed and buried after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the&#160; nearby city of Pompeii on the coast of Italy near Naples, was swallowed and forgotten, and not to be rediscovered for almost 18 centuries.&#160; 
The town’s buildings that were buried under meters of volcanic ash survived to tell the story of one of the most famous volcanic eruptions in history.&#160;
