For me, a good chunk of this year was spent simultaneously marveling at and feeling incredibly terrified by the rampant ignorance about women’s health and women’s bodies that continues to permeate our country. From the sheer number of ignorant Republican rape comments to the slut-shaming of Kristen Stewart, 2012 was a terrible year for women’s health in the United States. Let’s all read these quotes, get angry, and plot ways we can change the world with our hairy-legged, menstrual-cup wearing, vagina-having, feminist rage. More
Watch out, ladies: Now that his advertisers’ mass exodus has forced Rush Limbaugh to back off from calling Sandra Fluke a slut and prostitute, he seems to be looking for new targets in our demographic. Earlier this week, Limbaugh spent 40 minutes insulting Tracie McMillan and her new book, “The American Way Of Eating,” about our country’s food system and what it’s like to eat for the working class. Weird, right?—Especially considering that her book came out two weeks ago. But it seems that mostly, Limbaugh has designated her an easy target for his rage over all the “young, single white women” in this country who dare to speak about issues regarding our health. More
Wow, it’s been quite a week with all of the debate over birth control that Rush Limbaugh stirred up. Should health care insurance be forced to cover birth control? Should religious organizations have to cover birth control under their insurance plans? Should taxpayers be responsible for birth control? Those are the main debates that have been swirling around on our site, and boy, did some of our readers let us know what they think.
So, let’s give everyone an opportunity now to be heard. We want to know: Should birth control be covered by health insurance? Take our poll, leave your comments and voice your opinions once and for all (although, somehow we don’t think this will be the end of the discussion). More
Over the weekend, one of Blisstree’s readers commented on Facebook that our coverage of celebrities and Rush Limbaugh‘s birth control comments don’t meet the criteria for a wellness site. And apparently she’s not the only one who thinks health publishers should shy away from coverage of the contraceptive coverage controversy—while national news was chronicling every step of the story as a political story, it didn’t figure prominently in “health” news at all. Whether you’re a man or woman; left, right or in between: If you read health news, you should be mad if they ignored this story. More
Rachel Maddow gave yet another lesson on birth control for Rush Limbaugh and other GOP supporters who’ve been calling Sandra Fluke a slut for her statements in support of contraceptive coverage. She says his inflammatory statements are meant to be just that: His job, after all, is all about causing outrage for better ratings on talk radio. What’s more disturbing than his offensive statements about Sandra Fluke is that he doesn’t seem to understand how birth control works. So, like when she went into the “man cave” to teach Mitt Romney and other dudes about birth control, she gave yet another quick lesson in human biology for Limbaugh–and other members of the GOP who don’t seem to understand how it works. Can somebody please tell me why anyone listens to Rush Limbaugh? Or why he even has a job anymore? After his recent statement calling a woman seeking birth control a “slut” and a “prostitute” for not wanting to get pregnant when she has sex, I’m at a loss for why he’s still employed. More
Suffice it to say, Michelle Obama has likely been more health- and fitness-focused than any other first lady–and even many presidents. And yet, some people hate on her for her efforts and now, her body shape. Like Representative Jim Sensenbrenner who was recently overheard questioning the First Lady’s ability to give dietary advice because she has a “large posterior.” More
