Beware of Beach Sand

You might think digging around in the sand is fun this time of year, but a new report says sand can actually be a health hazard. People who “build castles and bury themselves in the sand at the beach are at greater risk of developing gastrointestinal diseases and diarrhea” than folks who just stroll along the beach.
I always thought the idea of burying yourself in the sand was kinda creepy. Now I know why! In addition to gastrointestinal diseases, people also had an increased chance of “upper respiratory illnesses, rashes, eye ailments, earache and infected cuts.” …read more

A day at the beach, building sand castles, swimming midst ocean waves, collecting shells, taking a picnic to the lighthouse, and basking in the salty air was a highlight in my childhood. We lived inland, so when we visited my aunt and uncle near the Atlantic Ocean, this was a joyous occasion that lives in my memories.
