If you have a vanity vs. free standing sink, you’ve got ready storage space under the sink. The problem with this is that most under the sink spaces are way under utilized. First of all, one side is usually taken up with visible and annoying pipes, and the other side is tall, but has no shelving system. The last issue are those really long drawers in bathroom vanities. They’re usually long, but not so wide, and few come with partitioned storage.

The best thing about storage solutions for under the sink or in a drawer is that you can buy ugly items. No one sees this stuff, so going cheap and not all that attractive is a-ok. Although, if you go cheap, make sure it’s not junky cheap. I.e. you still want it to last; buying new solutions a year from now because your old one broke is not very eco-friendly.

Some ideas:

This under the sink storage shelf rocks because it allows you to work around bathroom pipes.

Boring, but totally useful, Acrylic Drawer Storage Trays.

Rev-A-Shelf 14 In. Door Storage Trays – great idea for tall hair care supplies!

These above are some basics. Don’t forget that you can find all sorts of handy tray organizers at thrift stores too, many times in wood, which is nice. You can also improvise. For example, instead of trays, in my bathroom drawers I have this eclectic assortment of little wood boxes, small ceramic bowls, and other oddball containers. I fill them with hair clips, safety pins, jewelry, and so on. So long as you can find short containers (so you can shut your drawer) most anything works.

Three Basket Shower Caddy – I think this caddy would annoy me. Digging through baskets for stuff. Still, it’s unusual, which I do like, plus I know people who would love this – what do you think? Available at Organize-It.

Three-Tier Stainless Corner Caddy – one of the nicer corner caddies I’ve seen. I like how it’s not obnoxious with a pole, and also love how there’s so much space between each tier. Available at Organize-It.

Go see the intense Simplehuman Tension Shower Caddy - I figure if you ever get sick of it in the shower, you could always use it to practice pole dancing (if that’s your deal). Lastly, Stacks & Stacks has an oddball collection of hanging shower caddies – cloth and mesh bags that hang over the shower rod. I’m not a fan, but if you have a VERY small bathroom or shower, these would work nicely for you.

The last two thing we’ll be looking at in our bathroom decluttering series is some under the sink storage ideas and some dreamy bathrooms for inspiration so stay tuned.

Hey folks. Last week we started looking at bathroom clutter and how to get our bathroom organized. So far we’ve discussed, General bathroom decluttering and Pint sized bathroom storage for little humans.

Today, bathroom storage solutions for bigger humans, aka adults…

If you’ve got the floor or counter space, then delightful vintage storage bins are one way to go – perfect for rolled towels, extra TP, or even bath toys or body care products. The ultra hip or cute part is a bonus. My favorite vintage bins come from two places:

Serena & Lily has the world’s coolest everything storage bins. Their storage bins come in all shapes and sixes, beautiful colors and designs, and are so hearty you can even use them to hold ice and drinks at parties. Have you seen prettier bins!?

I also like the enamel wash bins (in pink or white) and storage bins in red or sage from Warm Biscuit.

Wall-Mounted Galvanized Steel Cubes via the Container Store. Great for when you’ve got no floor or counter space, but do have some free wall real estate.

Bamboo Lattice Storage Stool also via the Container Store. I like this idea, because it gives you somewhere to sit while bathing the kids plus has storage inside.

Invisible towel shelf – a strange but clutter free towel solution plus some extra um, magazine storage, both from Chiasso.

No space at all? Not even for a toothbrush holder? Try this totally fun solution below; the Feel Good Toothbrush Holder which attaches right to the mirror or a tile wall…

See how a hanging fruit basket can become handy bathroom storage. Very neat idea.

Coming up some wacky bath storage plus a few more bathroom tips before we move on to the next room in the house.

As small as they are, I swear kids come with more junk and gear than any adult I’ve ever met. Once I had my son, my household clutter grew a lot faster, and staying on top of it became more of a challenge. That said, there are some excellent kid-sized bathroom storage solutions around that will help to keep your life a little less cluttered and a lot saner; at least during tub time.

Boon makes bathroom toy fun easy with both the Frog Pod and now the new Bug Pod. Just scoop those toys out of the water and hang your pod up to dry. Cute and functional – can’t beat that.

Boon also has the world’s best looking toddler potty on the planet. This potty is small, sleek, and pretty, WITH built in storage.

If you’re tot is done with potty training, but you still need a stool in the bathroom, get one that combines function with storage. The UrbanBaby Kids Steps With Storage is one nice option. Fresh to look at in basic white, you can store small bath toys, or extra TP in the top.

I’m a little worried about how long these would stay sticky, but they’re kind of cool. The Gel Toothbrush Holder can be stuck on the mirror or wall, off the counter, and your kiddo simply sticks her toothbrush to the holder. It’s non-toxic and removable.

Hold lots of bath toys with the trap door wall mounted storage system.

Next up bathroom storage that’s a little more adult minded.

General ideas for decluttering your bathroom:

While I’m a big fan of consolidating bathroom products to save space, I know that advice like this is hard for some to swallow. Many people love their beauty products. If you’re a beauty product junkie, I can live with that, but your bathroom might not be able to. Don’t store unopened products in the bathroom.

This week, or maybe this month, we’re concentrating on Getting An Organized & Clutter-Free Home for the New Year. Right now we’re looking at bathrooms.

If you must have five face creams and four conditioners, only store the items you use currently and daily in the actual bathroom. Place stockpiled products elsewhere – a box under the bed, in the linen closet, etc.

If you hate a product, toss it, then recycle the bottle. Half used, never to be used again products take up way too much space.

Use a refillable soap pump vs. slippery soap sitting on the sink (cleaner, less fuss). If you’re really short on space, use a wall mounted pump to free up counters.

Use family products. When possible, share products vs. every family member having their own products. Even babies can use your shampoo, IF you have a healthy, low fragrance organic type. Instead of bar soap in the shower, get a pump bottle of body wash, and the whole family can use it.

Keep just four rolls of toilet paper in the bathroom. Put the rest in the linen closet.

Ditch the paper water cups; not only are these extremely bad in an eco-sense, but the take up lots of space. Teach everyone to use a cupped hand for water OR use small cups as toothbrush storage and water cups (wash each week).

Consider behind the door towel racks.

Install some bathroom cabinets above the toilet, or on other free wall space. You can get wall mounted small cabinets, that hold things like hairspray and hand towels for a fairly inexpensive cost.

Next up some cool bathroom storage ideas that will help to keep items off the counter, off the side of the tub, and out of the way.

Is this how your bathroom is making you feel? Drowning in the clutter? Not after this week. Let’s start with some basics…

So far we looked at some general tips and closets. Now we’re going to move to a high-traffic area – the bathroom.

Is this how your bathroom is making you feel? Drowning in the clutter? Not after this week. Let’s start with some basics…

1) Let stuff go: You’ve seen this rule before, but it is really the first law for decluttering almost any space. In the bathroom, letting go is even more important, because in most cases, the bathroom is a small space. You need to free up what you’ve got.

Every four months (or right now if it’s been a while) scan and declutter your medicine cabinet.

Consolidate in the bathroom – consolidation of items you use is key to an organized bathroom. Do you need four face creams? I’m betting not.

If it’s not for use in the bathroom, don’t keep it there. In fact, if you’ve got a super small bathroom, you may want to consider keeping even normal bathroom stuff out of the bathroom.

2) Keep it fresh: Create habits that allow you to quickly clean and organize your bathroom on a daily or weekly basis. Part of keeping spaces decluttered is finding a basic cleaning plan you can live with. Make a bathroom cleaning caddy will help.

3) Don’t underestimate pretty: Bathrooms don’t tend to be the most decor showered room of the house. But never underestimate beauty as a decluttering motivator. Hanging a lovely framed image, choosing a great looking shower curtain, placing flowers or candles in the bath; these are all things that make you more invested in a space. When you’re invested and actually like what you see, you’re going to keep that space looking better naturally. Later, we’ll look at some specific bathroom decor ideas.

Coming up some more ideas about decluttering and organizing the bathroom. Even if you’re starting from square one, the bathroom can be a fairly easy room to tackle.

Think high. If towel racks in the bedroom is too inconvenient, try hanging a series of racks on the wall – but place some higher than normal. So long as the tallest person in the house can reach the top rack, it’s all good.

Grab a bin and store your first aid supplies in a kitchen cupboard – how often does someone need first aid in the bathroom anyhow?

Consider an off the counter hand soap dispenser and tooth brush holder. There are plenty of bathroom accessories that you can attach to the wall to save counter space – assuming you have counter space.

What other steps can you think of to save room in an extra small bathroom?

Coming up we’ll be taking a look at the sponsor of our current Anywhere Vault Giveaway; they’ve had a site re-design which is cool, and I’ll be weighing in with my experience using the service as well.

First though, I thought we’d kick off the day with some bathroom clutter solutions. This is one area where I have almost no issues. I have just one bathroom in my house, but % wise, it’s the biggest room in the house. Seriously, you could fit a full sized bed in there. We have a toilet and tub of course, and also a laundry area with double stacked shelving above, and a huge wide floor to ceiling storage closet behind the bathroom door.

Most people are not so lucky. The bathroom tends to be the smallest room in the house, and all those supplies don’t help. One great space saver is consolidation. In other words, get a bathroom / beauty / clean routine and stick to it. For example, if space is limited in your bathroom, you can save a lot by figuring out which products work for you, and sticking with them.

Find one hair care routine and stick to it. Oodles of shampoo bottles really just clutter the tub. 15 different facial care products only fill your drawers, and make it hard to find what you need. I’ve seen bathrooms so full of bottles, jars, make-up, and sprays that it boggles the mind. Are all those products really helping your beauty and health?

I do sometimes feel like fun care items (I like to make my own scrubs and other things) but I only make one new experiment at a time. Another perk of decluttering your personal care routine is that you’ll save time. If you continually follow the same care strategies, you’ll be in and out of that bathroom faster. Lastly, you’ll save money.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t keep some sparkles around for a special day, or buy some new soap on a whim; just so long as those whims are few and far between. You can further consolidate by combining product. You can use lotion with sunscreen to cut down on having both sunscreen and lotion. You can use washable washcloths instead of millions of cotton balls. You can even use shampoo as body wash. I found this one organic lavender shampoo and you can use it for tons of stuff – I once even tried washing clothes with it, and guess what, soap is soap is soap. If you have kids, they can use your shampoo. Special kid bath products are overrated; just be careful of their eyes.

What does your bathroom routine look like? Is it insane, and taking over the bathroom, or do you have control?
