Image: sxc.hu

It’s being forced on young minds with a catchy tune and repetitive chorus. Some of the lines of the song contained distorted or outdated information.

The chanting of these words over and over made an impression on the children. “That sticks in my mind,” one youngster commented after music class. “I can’t stop singing it.”

Was this the intention? Coupled with the “Going Green” theme at many schools, these activities can’t help but imprint misinformation upon our youngsters even though they do learn some that is true. I didn’t hear any facts about the research that disproves many of the theories mentioned in the song.

As more and more scientists find facts that counter many of the scary ideas associated with global warming and exaggerated greenhouse effect, the agenda in schools and with our government is to ignore them and to impress young minds without giving balanced information.

Do you know what your kids are singing at school? I’m discovering it’s not entirely what they’re being taught in the traditional classroom. The songs they sing are very selective in getting across various agendas, too.

With the new school year and Fall here I can’t help but wonder if schools will actually close because of the swine flu or the common flu. How many of you are curious if thse “flu symptoms” will be ignored and no notices will be sent home in the fear parents will take their children out of school?

IMG: Sxc.hu

Keep in mind that schools actually get paid per student that is actually in school for that day. It was already stated that schools were not to close due to the swine flu, however it is already looking like schools are doing what they must to keep the children safe.

If you take a peek at google news you may have noticed that there were over 5 schools that were closed just today and will be closed tomorrow. Some of those schools were in New York, Arizona, Texas and many others. One school decided that they would have no school after 100 students out of 500 were absent in one day. An Aubrey school is currently closed until next week after two people died from the swine flu, one of which was an 11-year-old boy.

My question to you, as a parent, if your child tells you a HIGH number of students have H1N1 or that they have it will you keep your child home?

So begins an evening of frustration, even anger, and no one gets anything done. Some authorities feel the parents shouldn’t do any of the teacher’s work. Others think parents should get involved. Is there a happy medium?

If you don’t understand what the teacher or text book is teaching, say so. It doesn’t mean you, as a parent, are dumb. There simply are different methods of teaching. You may or may not agree with them. However, trying to insist on yours for homework and the teacher’s for class, can become very confusing for youngsters so no learning is accomplished.

Coordinate and cooperate with the teacher. Encourage your youngsters to ask for extra help. Meet with the teacher yourself and see how you can help. The teacher isn’t dumb and you aren’t dumb. And the child isn’t dumb. There are different ways of communicating and learning. So communicate together.

How do you solve the homework challenge?

This was an exciting time when I was a youngster, too. New clothing, new shoes, a new bookbag and possibly a new lunch box. Mother didn’t have a great deal of money to spend, but she saved up so we’d have something special for starting school. She was a former teacher and urged her four children to get a good education. She tried to make school exciting and interesting for us.

I try to impart this enthusiasm for learning during my work as a substitute teacher and a visiting author in schools. I also teach writing/reading workshops for youngsters in public, private and homeschools. Hopefully I encourage the youngsters to take a greater interest in books and writing stories, too.

How do you encourage your youngsters in their schooling and impart enthusiasm?

For me, chips have always been the default go-to for sandwiches or lunch in general, but as the new school year approaches I’ve been trying to re-think and re-plan what goes into my kids’ lunch boxes. Sure, they’ll still get a small bag of chips now and then, but I’m going substitute one of the below ideas several times a week as well!

~ Fresh fruit and vegetables. This one always seems to be at the top of the list for chip replacements, and for good reason. Fresh fruit and vegetables not only offer “healthier” calories, but they contain virtually no fat or processed sugars. This means they can load up on them at lunch time and still get the energy benefit for hours afterward. Veggies like carrot sticks, celery sticks, radishes, even broccoli and cauliflower are perfectly portable. Fruits like apples (if you cut them up, sprinkle with lemon juice to keep from browning), strawberries, bananas and grapes travel well too.

~ Pretzels and crackers. Baked carb snacks can help your child feel full, and since they’re not fried they don’t add a lot of unnecessary calories either.

~ Tortilla chips and salsa. Tortilla chips are also baked and have the satisfying crunch and light saltiness of regular fried potato chips. The salsa offers vegetables as well, and homemade salsa is even better!

~ Cheesesticks or yogurt. Unless your child gets some change to buy a carton of milk in the lunchroom, chances are they aren’t going to be getting any dairy in their lunch box (I’ve never been able to get a Thermos to keep milk above lukewarm!). Cheese sticks or a small reusable container filled with yogurt can fill the void, and fresh fruit in the yogurt can even act as a nutritious dessert, too.

What are your favorite non-chips foods to put in lunchboxes?

that are left behind with the “weird feeling.” Not many people talk about how mom and dad feel so that’s what we are doing today.

How did you feel when you dropped your child off for the first time and watched those yellow bus doors close behind them? Did you watch the bus until it was no longer in sight? I’ve seen this many times and wondered about it, see I may have two older children but this year was the first time I’d be sending a child without an older sibling. I watched as she introduced herself to the driver and was seated. I thought I’d just walk home but I waited until it passed our street before we went home, however I did not wait until it disappear. I hope this doesn’t make me a bad mom.

I did, however, call around 9:30 when I knew they had already taken role, just so I knew that she was in school and fine. I did this with the other two children as well, I’m not entirely sure why. Maybe because when I was younger I was kidnapped and remember the fear of traveling and hiding. It has never left me and I know that even family can do something like this, it can be anyone you know. The school assured me she was safe and laughing with another little girl, I was satisfied and knew I could go about my schedule today.

Today, I did not feel as bad as I thought I would. But I had two still home with me, ask me on Tuesday how I feel when it’s just me and Little A (2yr old) and he realizes his playmate/sister is missing. How did you feel on that first day of school? My feelings were mixed with happiness, sadness and of course anxiousness as I waited to hear how the day went.

everyone to be dressed the same for gym class. The only problem I have with this is they are charging an arm and a leg for the gym clothes. If they are simple shirts why can’t we dress buy them cheaper at the store? My guess is they have some logo on them just so they can charge the extra amount. UGH.

The only things we did not buy were:

- an erasable pen: this was off BalletGirl’s list and she’s only in the 4th grade. Do they even use pens in that grade? SoccerBoy never needed one last year.

- red checking pen: I grabbed a lot of red ink pens, which I hope is what she actually meant. But she only wanted one so really I’m not sure. I hated buying all those red pens but the only other option was to purchase 2 red pens for $2.50 or buy 10 for $1. Hmmm, you tell me?

- athletic supporter: a cup. Hubby doesn’t understand why they need one but I think it is to protect all those young boys that’ll be doing football and baseball this year in gym class. Right?

Is there anything on your list that you haven’t got yet or don’t understand why it is even there? Lets talk about it, I know I can’t be the only one.

I thought it would be fun to bring up this topic as I’m sure I’m not the only one counting down those days for school to start. Right? Oh I’m the only one, well we did end before June so maybe

IMG: Sxc.hu

that’s why. What? Oh you in the corner, yeah you want your kids to go back to school soon too. Yeah I thought there were more. Yes, I know the sayings and fightings and even the whinings. Here’s the things the kids say about starting school.

Children’s Reasons for School to Start:

- I won’t be bored anymore
- I want to see my friends
- No more chores
- making new friends
- we get lockers
- no more fighting with my brother

The Mother’s reasons for School to Start:

- No more headaches
- No more screaming
- No more fighting
- teachers could deal with them
- peace at last
- I’ll get a clean house

Gee, does any of this sound like your reasonings or your child’s? Well maybe we all love one another but we can drive each other nuts too. But just to shed a little light, school starts in a little over a month and then there will be small breaks just to help you deal with them being away. Ya know like the Monday right after they start school. I swear I have no clue why they start school just to have an in-service day a few days later. Mothers and fathers, we all know you love them and they love you just as much but we all need a break even if it is a few hours. No go play with your kids, school is almost here.
