Medically Necessary Abortion Could Send El Salvadorian Woman To Jail

A 22-year-old El Salvadorian woman only known as Beatriz may go to jail if she chooses to save her own life. According to Amnesty International, Beatriz is 4.5 months pregnant, but doctors discovered that her fetus has anencephaly, meaning it is developing without a brain nor portions of the skull and will not be capable of being carried to term. She needs an abortion, but nobody will perform it nor grant doctors permission to do so. More »

Singapore Government Reminds Women To Have Babies ASAP Via Obnoxious Fairytales

When it comes to being childless, whether by choice or not, women are frequently criticized while men face little to no repercussions. From well-intentioned remarks to snide comments from family, friends or strangers, women are often told that motherhood is somehow our duty, and by deciding not to participate means we’re incomplete. Now, shaming those females who have opted out of parenthood is apparently an actual government duty — via fairytale. More »

Ridiculous Stock Photos That Come Up When Searching "Women Smoking"

Earlier today, I wrote this post about women and smoking and HOO BOY did I laugh and shake my head in disbelief when I searched stock photos for the search term “women smoking.” I wasn’t surprised; stock photo sites are notorious for their often sexist and just plain strange depictions of women (see also: pregnant women smoking and “woman at bar.”) Still, you’ve got to click through for some of the crazy-ass images that come up on THE FIRST PAGE of search results for “women smoking.” From scantily-clad vampires to faux Goth warriors and quite a few pictures I can’t even connect to smoking AT ALL (I’m looking at you, creepy priestess), Shutterstock has inadvertently created an anti-smoking PSA. GOP Rep. Tom Cotton Thinks Women's 'Nature' Could 'Impair' Military Efforts

Women have served in the military for over 4,000 years, all around the world. But GOP Congressman Tom Cotton is concerned that our “nature” could really bring down the infantry. In an interview on Laura Ingraham’s radio show yesterday, he was asked whether he supported allowing women to serve in combat roles in the miliary, and responded with platitudes about women’s physical inferiority More »

Ex-Olympic Runner Suzy Favor Hamilton Worked As An Escort (And No One Knows What To Say About It)

Former Olympic runner Suzy Favor Hamilton is all over the news today after The Smoking Gun uncovered that she’s been working as a high-priced escort for an illegal Las Vegas company. And surprisingly, she’s been quite vocal about fessing up to her work as a prostitute and apologizing for making “a huge mistake.” And while sex scandals aren’t uncommon among sports stars, this one seems to have everyone gobsmacked, partially because the way she’s handled it just makes it clear that the Suzy Hamilton escort story is probably really, really sad.
